Amidst Chilla-i-Kalan chill politicians face exit poll heat | Angry Omar asks pollsters to wait till Dec 23; PDP remains calm | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 21: As Chilla-i-Kalan (harshest 40-day period of winter) commenced today the politicians, who usually used to move out of Kashmir during this period to save themselves from the biting cold, could feel the chill amidst mounting tension ahead of Wednesday the counting day when results of the five phased Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls would be declared. The exit poll results predicting the rout of National Conference have created ripples in the party camp with most leaders rejecting these. Soon after pollsters predicted that Peoples Democratic Party is all set to emerge as the single largest party in JK, the angry Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: "P.S. why not wait till the 23rd & then give yr viewers facts rather than theories that at this point have neither head nor tail (sic)." The National Conference General Secretary and senior party leader Ali Mohammad Sagar seconded his "piqued" boss saying, "Exit polls are a conspiracy against the NC." However, he was quick to add, "Even if some of our MLAs lose they will lose by thin margin because of high turnout." Sources said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday took a day off from TV channels and attended a few social gatherings as his tenure would end on Monday. Exit polls have predicted that PDP would get nearly 32-38 seats and BJP would follow with 27-33 seats, while NC is likely to get between 8 to 14 seats and its ally Congress would have to remain content with 4 to 10 seats. The PDP spokesman Naeem Akhtar, who returned to the Valley after a hectic campaigning in Jammu region claimed that his party won't need allies and PDP is hopeful of getting more than 44 seats out of 87. Sources told Early Times that top PDP leaders, including the party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti stayed away from the Valley today. "The PDP patron stayed at his Jammu home while Mehbooba flew to Delhi to attend the ongoing parliament session," sources added. The second rung leaders of NC, Congress and PDP have been visiting various Sufi shrines and saints to seek their blessings ahead of the counting day. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set up 28 centres where counting will begin at 8 am on Tuesday. |
