Fate of over 820 contestants including 276 independents locked in EVMs | Police, observers to be relieved after Dec 23 | | Bivek Mathur

Jammu, Dec 21: With polling for all 87 assembly constituencies concluded on December 20, fate of over 820 candidates including 276 independents has been locked in Electronic Voting machines (EVMs). Meanwhile 28 election observers, 16 IPS police observers, 86 General observers and 7 Awareness observers will be sent back to their parent states after the declaration of results onDecember 23. Batamaloo constituency presently represented by National Coference MLA Mohammad Irfan Shah had the highest number of 16 contesting candidates, whereas the Jammu West constituency, Kathua assembly segment and Sopore assembly constituency had second highest number of 15 contesting candidates. Vijapur, Reasi, Sonawar, Amirakadal had 14 contesting candidates each . Sopore constituency had the highest numbers of 10 independent candidates whereas Noorabad occupied second position in the table with second highest 9 independent candidates awaiting election results. Reasi constituency in Jammu and Amirakadal in Srinagar occupied third position in the table with 8 independent candidates awaiting election results. Meanwhile there was no independent candidate for Karnah, Lolab, Uri, Bijbehara, Kargil, Banihal, Gulabgarh, Chenani and Samba constituency respectively. As far as Leh assembly segment is concerned, neither Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nor Jammu and Kashmir National Conference had fielded any candidate and only two candidates, one each from Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress (INC) respectively were in the fray. According to official figures, voter turnout in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections has increased significantly but the number of aspiring lawmakers dipped substantially compared to 2008 Assembly polls when a record 1,344 candidates tried their luck on 87 constituencies. The number of candidates this year has dropped by nearly 39 per cent compared to the polls held in 2008. According to the data provided by the state election authorities, 1,344 candidates contested the 2008 Assembly elections to the 87-member House but the number this year fell to over 820. The number of Independent candidates fell by more than 46 per cent from 513 in 2008 to 276 this year. |
