Jammu, Dec 21: In a major achievement, Poonch Police under the supervision of AK Attri , DIG police Rajouri-Poonch range and JS Johar, SSP Poonch have recovered heroine worth Rs 54.16 Crore from the possession of two notorious drug trafficker.
The accused and his colleague have been identified as Mohd Rafi (ex SPO) s/o Sher Mohd Gujjart and Shakeel Ahmed s/o Faiaz Mohd both r/o Danadoian in Mandi tehsil. The duo was on way to Jammu to deliver the same to the recipient for its distribution to the customers. Meanwhile, a senior police officer said that had the consignment reached Jammu, it would have been enough to involve around one lakh youth to take to narcotics. However, the duo accused was sent to the Joint Interrogation Centre, Jammu for their detailed questioning, the police officer said.
"54 kg heroin worth Rs 54 crore, allegedly smuggled from Pakistan, were seized near Betaal nullaha situated along Line of Control (LOC) here and two persons have been arrested in this connection", police confirmed.
Police sources said that during frisking of vehicles on December 20 one day ahead of polling for 4 constituencies in Rajouri district, Poonch police had laid several check points in the district to prevent any act of sabotage by the anti-national elements. At Kalai police check post 12 kms ahead of Poonch town one Mahindra mini load carrier driven by Shakeel was stopped for frisking. Sources added that Mohd Rafi was also present in the vehicle and during checking police recovered 54 packets of narcotic drug powder (heroin) weighing 1040 gms each. Senior police officers said that the cost of recovered narcotic drug weighing about 56 kg and 160 gms which is valued at Rs 56 crores and 16 lacs in the International market.
Police have booked both the accused under sections 8/21/23 DPS act I FIR No 177/14 registered at Pooch police station.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Poonch said that Mohd Rafi is a notorious anti-national, anti-social element and is also involved/booked in various unlawful activities in the past also.
On February 2, 2012 (FIR 14/2012) he was booked at Pooch police station under sections 13/17/18/39 and 40 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act ( UAPA) and the case was challaned in the court.
He was again booked under sections13/18/19/20/and 39 of UAPA (FIR No 73/2014) and was challned in the court on 2/11/2012.
Sources said that Mohd Rafi, developed relations with one Pakistan based militant namely Tahir in Central Jail at Kotbhalwal. The latter paved way for the Mohd Rafi to get engaged in the trans -border smuggling. After, getting bail, he made contacts with the Pakistan based smugglers as suggested by the Tahir in Central Jail and started pushing intoxicants to India.
JS Johar, SSP Poonch added that Mohd Rafi also remained hard core Over Ground Worker (OGW) of Lasher-e-Toiba outfit and was also involved in several anti-national activities.
"It can't be denied that the consignment could be used as part of narco-terrorism nexus being run on the behest of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan army" said SSP.
The recovery was affected by police party that included Amit Gupta, ASP, Sagar Singh, Dy SP, Sheezan Bhat , DySP operations and Rakesh Kumar, SHO , Poonch.
