BJP calls for debate on Art-370 | Back to the basics | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 21: The BJP, which is likely to emerge as the second largest party in the state by winning a respectable number of seats in Jammu province, is back to the basics. On Saturday, a number of senior BJP leaders, including the party's ideologues, during TV debates on the exit polls concerning Jammu & Kashmir stated and restated that the BJP's stand on Article 370 remains unchanged and that this statue has to be removed from the Indian Constitution as it has hampered the process of the state's integration into India and harmed the interests of the state and its people. They also asserted that there was no need for the BJP to raise the issue of Article 370 during its election campaigning in Jammu & Kashmir as its stand on it was too well-known. Even sophisticated Seshadari Chari, former editor of Organizer and senior BJP leader, without mincing words asserted that the BJP would want Article 370 to be removed from the Indian statue book and called for a wider debate on it to find if this Article had benefited the state and its people. This was the line the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had advocated on December 1, 2013 during his massive Lalkar Rally in Jammu. He rubbished the claim of those who accused the BJP of diluting its stand on Article 370 for winning a few seats in the Kashmir Valley and tried to set the record straight by saying that the BJP remains committed to abrogating it after educating public opinion about the negative impact of Article 370 on the state polity and the people of the state. He didn't endorse any of the views advanced by other panelists in support of Article 370. The BJP's another ideologue Subramanian Swami went several steps further while countering the view of People's Conference chairman Sajad Lone's sister Shabnam Lone, a Supreme Court lawyer, that Article 370 cannot be abrogated and said, and very rightly, that the President of India could abrogate it using the powers vested in him by Article 370 itself subject to the condition that the Union Cabinet sends a proposal to this effect to him. Article 370 will be abrogated sooner than later, he said, and added that it was not a boon but a deadly poison. That it was none other than Seshadari Chari and Subramanian Swami who asserted and re-asserted that the stand of the BJP on Article 370 remains unchanged and that it was hardly necessary to raise this issue during the election campaigning should establish that the BJP might encourage a debate on this Article to prepare ground for its abrogation. The point is that the state is again likely to witness a controversy over this Article with its supporters and critics taking on each other to keep their respective constituencies in a good humour. |
