J&K set for 'surprising' results as counting begins today | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 22: After around month long election process, Jammu and Kashmir is all set to see some 'surprising' results as counting will begin here tomorrow amid tight security arrangements. Tight security and other arrangements have been put in place for the counting of votes in 87 Assembly constituencies which went to the polls in five phases in Jammu and Kashmir, recording 66 per cent voter turnout, five per cent more than what was witnessed in 2008. The counting will take place at Polytechnic College and Maulana Azad Memorial College here. The voter turnout in all the five phases was the highest during the past 25 years in the state which witnessed militant activities for about two decades. Though different opinion polls have predicted hung Assembly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is shown as a single largest party followed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). PDP, had 21 members in the 11th Assembly, In the 2008 Assembly Election here, NC emerged as the largest party winning 28 seats out of 87 Assembly seats. PDP was second with 21 seats while the Congress got third spot winning 17 seats, BJP, however, could win only 11 seats. NC formed government with the support of Congress in the state and Omar Abdullah became the state's youngest ever Chief Minister at 38. The fate of 835 candidates including Mr Abdullah, former Chief Minister and PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was sealed by 66 per cent voters out of turn 72,59,293 total electorate in all the 87 constituencies spread over 22 districts in all the three regions of Kashmir valley, Ladakh and Jammu regions. The first phase in 15 Assembly segments was held on November 25 while the last and fifth phase on December 20. Meanwhile, authorities have also imposed restrictions in some areas under Section 144 CrPC in the district in view of counting. Large number of security personnel and state police contingents have been deployed to avoid any untoward incident during counting of votes. "Only candidates, agents besides the security personnel and media persons will be allowed to enter the counting centres," an official said. He said, adequate security arrangements have been made for the counting day, adding, "the officials have been trained in handling the voting machines and they will reach the venue early morning." |
