Early Times Report

anantnag, Dec 22: A forest fire in Pahalgam has endangered rare spices of the wild animals due to indifferent attitude of the wildlife department who haven't yet initiated any step for dousing the flames.
Reports said that fire raged in the forest area of Veersern village in Pahalgam today at around 1600 hours. Locals informed Early Times that fire erupted due to unlawful activities being carried out in the forest since from last several months.
"Fire erupted due to Charcoal making as few people in nexus with the employees of the department are carrying out this illegal activity in the forests." Locals told Early Times over phone.
They said that besides informing the employees of the department no one among them turned to douse the flames. "Every time whenever fire erupts in our forests we help them but this time they even not responded to our calls." Village residents rued.
They said that so far as hundreds of green Deodar trees have been gutted in the devastating fire which is still raging.
Wildlife warden South Kashmir, Mohd Maqbool Baba when contacted said that all the animals and birds in the areas are safe as the forest fire isn't of such intensity.
" I am myself monitoring the situations, forest fire has erupted but it will not harm the animals." He said.
He said that they have to trek a large area for dousing the flameas so it was not possible for them to start the process in the evening.
"I can risk my life but not of my employees so we decided to trek the area in early morning and will douse the fire without causing much damage to the wildlife ecology." He added.
