UN called Hafiz 'Sahib', J&K govt had termed Guru as 'Sahib' | Acts of similarity | | Both acts are highly condemnable Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 22: There is one similarity between the UN and the J&K government on terror masterminds - LeT founder Hafiz Saeed and Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. While UN Security Council Committee Chair Gary Quinlan has referred to Hafiz as 'Sahib', J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah and law minister Mir Saifullah had called Guru 'Sahib'. Both the terrorists have been described in respectful terms. The two had executed attacks on India. Hafiz is the mastermind of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and Guru was the Parliament attack mastermind. While the UN letter, that referred to Hafiz as 'Sahib', has left India fuming; the actions of Omar and Saifullah had led to bedlam in the J&K legislative assembly. The suffix 'sahib' is usually reserved for men held in respect. Guru was convicted and sentenced to death by Supreme Court for plotting the December 2001 attack on Parliament. Omar Abdullah's anger was palpable on March 5, 2013 when while speaking on the adjournment motion on Guru in the state assembly, he had termed his hanging as "political". The legislative assembly had witnessed bedlam after Saifullah had called Guru 'Sahib'. The House had witnessed uproarious scenes with the opposition BJP and other parties criticising the government for discussing the parliament attack mastermind in the state assembly. In a bid to calm down the tempers, Saifullah had said, "Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's stand has been that the mortal remains of Afzal Guru 'sahib' should be returned. It is also the stand of the National Conference." PDP MLAs too had rushed towards the well of the House shouting "Guru sahib ki body ko wapas lao wapas lao-resolution lao resolution lao". Some members were seen standing on the well tables and hurling mikes and chairs. Now, the UNSC letter, that has referred to Hafiz as 'Sahib', has made India furious. The Centre is seething in anger at the respect shown to the Mumbai terror attack mastermind. Nearly two years back, Congress leader Digvijay Singh too was slammed for using the words "Hafiz Saeed Sahib" during a speech. The perturbed India has decided to seek a clarification on the issue from the world body. It is understood that the government wants a reply on the usage in the communication by Gary Quilan who made the reference to Saeed in the communication on information regarding banned terror outfit LeT (Lashkar-e-Toiba) and its founder Saeed. The United Nations had declared JuD a terrorist organisation in December 2008. Saeed himself is a UN-designated terrorist. The United States had slapped a $10 million bounty on Saeed and his brother-in-law in April 2003. Despite that he has been addressed in a respectful manner in the UNSC letter. The Centre's anger against UNSC for describing Hafiz as 'Sahib' is genuine but it must also take note of those who had called Guru 'Sahib' and that too in the legislative assembly. Guru was involved in the most condemnable attack on the parliament and deserved no respect from any Indian as his act by all means was anti-national. Those, who speak in his favour and give him respect, also need to be booked under the law of the land. |
