SRINAGAR, Dec 22: As the stage is set for the counting of votes across the state for the 87 assembly seats the picture emerging from the exit polls and opinion polls carried out after and before the polls suggest that People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would emerge as the single largest party.
In the 87 member house it is expected that PDP will win 36-38 seats followed by Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) with 18-22 seats. Partners in the present coalition government National Conference and Congress are all set to face drubbing in the assembly elections. While NC is projected to win 10-14 seats Congress would win around 8-10 seats.
In the present assembly NC is the leading party with 28 legislators followed by PDP that has 21 members. Congress has 21 legislators while as the BJP has 11 members in the assembly.
Exit polls suggest that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is fighting the elections from two assembly seats is likely to win the Sonwar seat but in Beerwah he is set to lose to Nazir Ahmad Khan of Congress.
National Conference bigwigs like Abdul Rahim Rather, Mian Altaf Ahmad, Sakina Itoo, Nasir Aslam Wani, Devinder Singh Rana, Dr. Mustafa Kamaal, Mir Saifullah, Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Mohammad Shafi Uri, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Peer Afaq Ahmad, Mohammad Sayeed Akhoon and Irfan Ahmad Shah are all set to bite dust from Charar-I-Sharief, Kangan, Noorabad, Amira Kadal, Nagrota, Gulmarg, Kupwara, Handwara, Uri, Sonawari, Zadibal, Hazratbal and Batmaloo constituencies respectively.
While most of the sitting legislators of PDP are likely to retain their seats some of the party legislators may not be able to win the 2014 assembly election. The party is likely to lose Devsar, Home Shalibugh and Lolab constituencies to Congress and National Conference candidates. Mohammad Sartaj Madni, Abdul Gaffar Sofi and Advocate Abdul Haq Khan are set to lose their assembly seats this time around.
Results of the 2014 assembly elections are also likely to throw up surprises on other front as well. King makers in the past like Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, Ghulam Hassan Mir and Hakeem Mohammad Yasin are also likely to face defeat this time around. Pertinently all these assembly seats are likely to be win by PDP. Tarigami, Mir and Yaseen are seeking re-election from Kulgam, Gulmarg and Khan Saheb assembly seats.
Despite all the hype and hoopla that they will win at least five assembly seats, Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone may register victory in the Handwara assembly segment. Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) President, Engineer Abdul Rashid is more than likely to lose the Langate assembly seat to Ghulam Mohammad Panditpuri of PDP.
BJP that has been claiming a lot about Mission 44+ is all set to draw a blank from the Kashmir valley. After the party failed to motivate the Kashmiri Pandits to vote for them it is certain that the party would fail to open its account from Kashmir. The party has lost a golden opportunity to win the Habba Kadal seat despite the fact that there are more than 17,000 Kashmiri Pandit voters in this assembly seat.
