Hours before counting of votes Omar accepts defeat
Says Srinagar residents did not vote for him

SRINAGAR, Dec 22: Hours before the counting of votes for 87 assembly seats in Jammu & Kashmir, chief minister Omar Abdullah today regretted that people of Srinagar did not come out to vote despite heavy turnout across the state. Omar also ruled out any alliance with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for the formation of next government in the state.
Addressing a press conference here this evening, Omar said that people of summer capital should have come out and voted during the assembly elections. He said that even if people had complaints against his government city residents should have cast their vote like the other people of the state.
"There was an overwhelming response to the elections in the state and people in large numbers came out to cast their vote. However, at the same time people of Srinagar did not come out in expected numbers to cast votes. They should make their voice heard and same is possible only when they vote in good numbers," said Omar.
The chief minister said that complaints of Srinagar residents regarding poor infrastructure or alleged tardy performance of the government after the flood could have been solved if the people would have come out and elected their representative. He said mere complaining is not enough as this should be supplemented by the likely solution to the problems being faced by people.
"It is true that BJP did not talk about abrogation of Article 370 in the recent past but at the same time the party has not disassociated themselves from Babri Masjid issue and implementation of uniform civil code in the country. Even the Prime Minister has remained silent on an important issue like conversions going across the country," said Omar.
The chief minister said that National Conference would not enter into any arrangement with BJP for formation of government in the state. He said since the policies of BJP are against the people of state any post poll arrangement with the party is out of question. He defended his decision to enter in coalition with Congress in 2008 saying that there was no other alternative available then.
During the press conference, Omar listed more of his failures than successes during his six year stint as chief minister of the state. He said that killing of more than 120 civilians in Kashmir during 2010 could have been avoided had he acted in a mature manner. He added that despite his repeated claims he could not get the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) revoked or partially withdrawn from the state.
The chief minister said that elections in Jammu & Kashmir should be viewed as a process of electing the new government and that it has got nothing to do with Indo-Pak relations or for that matter the Kashmir issue. He said that attaching strategic importance to elections in the state does not augur well for the overall political scenario.
"People’s Democratic Party (PDP) should have won more than 50 seats as it could have easily targeted the present coalition dispensation on three key issues of summer agitation of 2010, execution of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru and devastating September flood. The party's inability to cross 50+ seats clearly shows that there is something wrong with that party as well," said Omar.
