Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 24: Report that the Muslims constitute 68.3 per cent population in Jammu & Kashmir has not gone down well who have worked on the composition of population in this sensitive border state. "The Muslims do not constitute 68.3 per cent population of J&K," said an expert on Saturday, and added that the "non-Muslims in Jammu & Kashmir constitute more than 40 per cent population". To make his point the expert said that "those who conducted the 2011 census in the state have not taken into consideration those Kashmiri Hindus who migrated outside the state in 1990 to escape the militant's wrath" and that "the figures, which were quoted by the Union Home Ministry do not include such Kashmiri Hindus". According to one estimate, more than one lakh Kashmiri Hindus are living in different parts of the country, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Lucknow and a few other places. "Had those who conducted census taken into consideration these figures, the story would have been somewhat different". The expert further claimed that the figures quoted in the report "also do not include the refugees from West Pakistan whose population is more than 1.5 lakh". It is pertinent to mention here that these refugees are Indian nationals, but not citizens of Jammu & Kashmir. They are entitled to take part in the Lok Sabha elections only and their names do not figure in the electoral rolls meant for the Assembly elections. "It also appears that those who conducted the census in Jammu & Kashmir also did not take into account those non-Muslim unregistered families which migrated to Jammu from the Pakistan-occupied-Jammu & Kashmir in 1947," the expert also said. Now that some experts have claimed that the non-Muslim population is Jammu & Kashmir is more than 40 per cent, it is time for the Registrar General of census to explain if his department took into consideration the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus living outside the state, the Refugees from West Pakistan (all non-Muslims) and the unregistered non-Muslim families which migrated from PoJK. It is a must.
