Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 24: Working president of the decimated NC Omar Abdullah is feeling quite upset these days. The reason is that the PDP, which inflicted a crushing defeat on the NC and won 28 seats in the assembly elections, and the BJP, which created history by winning 25 seats, have almost reached an understanding as far as the formation of a stable and strong government in the state is concerned.
It is the great possibility of the PDP and the BJP working together in the interest of the people of the state that has rattled him and leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is desperate for his re-entry into Rajya Sabha with the support of NC, which is a remote possibility. What has shocked Omar Abdullah all the more was the Friday report that the PDP and the BJP had agreed to contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections jointly. The PDP and the BJP will win all the four seats in case they contest the election together.
The report that both the PDP and the BJP had agreed to field two candidates each in the Rajya Sabha elections also constituted a clear indication that the people of the state will get the PDP-BJP government sooner than later, may be before February 7, when the election to the four Rajya Sabha seats will be held in Jammu.
The developments which have started unfolding since the beginning of this week have dampened the spirit of leaders like Omar Abdullah, who do no want a popularly elected government in place.
They are felt to be wanting political instability and anarchy in the state so that they remain somewhat relevant. They were shown their rightful place the day Omar Abdullah asked Governor Vohra to relieve him of his position of caretaker Chief Minister. PDP chief spokesperson Nayeem Akhtar had then declared that the PDP would prefer Governor Rule rather than an alliance with the unpopular NC.
Convinced that they are not in the reckoning and that the PDP and the BJP would be at the helm of affairs in the state anytime from now, Omar Abdullah and other out-on-the-limb NC and Congress leaders have unleashed a campaign both against the PDP and the BJP. They are accusing the PDP and the BJP of compromising their respective ideologies for the sake of power conveniently forgetting that the new government in the state would function as per the common minimum programme that is being worked out - a common minimum programme that would be based on sovereignty, development and good governance and regional balance.
Omar Abdullah and his cronies are leveling charges against the PDP and the BJP, which no one in the state would appreciate. For, the NC is a one party that has consistently compromised its ideology to come into power. The NC did it in 1975, in 1987 and in 1998-1999. And as far as Omar Abdullah was concerned, his six-year-long misrule was nothing but a saga of compromises. That Omar Abdullah didn't quit the NDA Government when the BJP threw the anti-India autonomy committee report into the dustbin was a glaring instance that established that the NC could compromise its position anytime for the sake of power and profit. It would be only proper to say that the NC has been suffering a defeat after defeat because the people of the state in general and of the Valley in particular realized way back in 2002 that the Abdullahs were not trustworthy and that they were only interested in power.
Omar Abdullah needs to appreciate the ground realities in the state and adopt a positive approach. Such an attitude on his part may help him revive the declining NC. He should be grateful to those people of Beerwah who with great difficulty ensured his unimpressive victory in the Assembly elections. He would commit a grave political blunder if he forgets that his uncle Mustafa Kamal lost his security deposit and he himself could win the election by a slender margin of 900 votes.
