Baramulla turns into fortress ahead of R-Day

Baramulla, Jan 25: Amid intelligence inputs that militants may disrupt the Republic Day celebrations, authorities have turned this north Kashmir town into a garrison to ensure that day passes off peacefully. District Police Lines Baramulla the main venue of the Republic day function in the district, has been completely sealed and the barricades have been erected on the roads leading to the venue. Movement of the civilian in the late hours around the venue has been restricted.
A senior government official said:" Recently security forces killed three militants in volatile Sopore town, a few kilometers from Baramulla. Sopore town has witnessed spurt in militant activities and inputs suggest that militants are desperate to make their presence felt. We have put adequate security arrangements at place to thwart any possible misadventure."
The District Development Commissioner (DDC) Baramulla Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone would take salute at the District Police Lines here while other top officials are expected to attend the Republic Day function.
Meanwhile Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Dr Shah Fasial would take salute at the Sheri Kashmir Sports Stadium Bandipora.
Deputy commissioner Kupwara, Itrat Hussain Rafique would take salute at the District Police Lines Kupwara.
Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF are keeping a tight vigil in sensitive parts of north Kashmir.
It is pertinent to mention here that on January 14 this month one foreign LeT militant was killed in Chankhan area and on Jan 18, two foreign ultras, of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfits were killed in a gun battle with government forces in Sopore town of Baramulla district.
While as one militant of LeT outfit, Zubair Ahmad alias Abu Mwaya of Pakistan was arrested from the house of village headman in Choora area of Sopore town on January 16.
