Pak sponsored tanzeems want to keep pot boiling
ET Report
JAMMU, Jan 25: Once again separatists have called for a shutdown in Kashmir on the occasion of Republic Day. The practice of calling for a strike on January 26 has been going on since 1990 as separatists believe that by doing so they do a favour to Kashmiris. What an irony! How wrong they are.
Statements calling for a strike start pouring in at least a week before January 26 celebrations. Even the tanzeems which comprise only of three to four people ensure that their statement reaches the news organizations well in advance and gets published. In the hey days of militancy usually the militant outfits used to call for the strike and used to threaten people of dire consequences if they didn't follow their diktats. With the passage of time militancy became weak and people started heaving a sigh of relief. However, the surrendered and released militants in order to keep themselves busy reorganized themselves and constituted small groups which claimed that they were fighting for the so-called freedom of Kashmir.
A police officer while talking to Early Times said, "These former militants constituted these groups on the instructions of their bosses sitting across the Line of Control. Till the recent past they used to get regular salaries from across the LoC."
He said that after issuing the shutdown calls they (separatists) usually forward the links of the newspapers in which their press notes appear to their bosses and ensure that they keep on getting the funds from the other side. "Issuing shutdown calls is a full-fledged business which is sponsored by Pakistan and the ISI. During the years police and other security agencies have choked the space for these people by locating and blocking hawala channels through which money used to flow," he added.
Another police officer said that security agencies choking the hawala channels has led to many people getting disillusioned and they have closed down their shops.
"Now only major players are in the fray and they too are finding it very difficult to keep their flock together as resources have dried up. These players have been trying their best to ensure that money which used to flow should keep on coming but with the change of guard at Centre and BJP led government clipping their wings has made things difficult for them," the officer added.
Another factor which is giving sleepless nights to separatists is that BJP is all set to become a part of the state government in Jammu and Kashmir and there is every possibility of new dispensation acting tough against the secessionist elements. Most of them (separatists) fear that they may have to cool their heels in prison as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it clear that secessionism is unacceptable and no talks would be held over Jammu and Kashmir.
The BJP spokesman Khaild Jehangir while talking to Early Times said, "I hope separatists realize the futility of violence and join the national mainstream. I appeal all the Kashmiri leaders to give up their rigidity and tread the path of development."
The BJP spokesman reiterated that doors of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi are open for all the people who want to shun violence and join the mainstream. "Jammu and Kashmir has suffered a lot during the past two decades due to senseless violence and shutdown calls. Separatists should realize that hartal politics during the past 25-years has not yielded anything neither would it serve any purpose in future also," he added.
