Early Times Report

Kathua, Jan 27: Pollution in general and due to chemical discharge from Industrial units in Kathua has allegedly threatened crops and has damaged several tones of crops in fertile belt of Andhard area in Kathua and also has endangered the water life in various water bodies in Kathua district but the nodal authority -the State Pollution Control Board to put check on it is in deep slumber.
The chemically polluted discharge in the area has put villagers cautious about to use water for domestic purposes as they are worried about their health keeping in view of hazards of the using polluted water. "The issue has been several times raised before local administration but nothing has been done except assurance by administration,' Naresh Sharma, local resident said.
He said the area was once rich with good quality of crops but everything has been damaged due to industrial pollution. Skin Allergy and safe drinking water for human and live stocks has made the life difficult in the region, he added. He sought Water Purification Plant besides the canal in village Khokhyal so as water can be used for different purpose and especially for crops. When contacted to Shaukat Choudhary, IFS, Regional Director, SPCB, Jammu said proper directions have been given to each Industrial unit established in the area. He added that district level officer has been deputed who inspects and ensures stern action against violators if anything is found wrong/below the norms. He even added that any industrial unit found creating pollution will be shut down. He also ensured to remove black moles within working of the department.
State Pollution Control Board (SPCB has set up Environment Testing Plant, ETP, in each industrial unit to control the pollution but it seems the most of the plants are out of order and polluted water is being discharged from Industrial area to village Khokhyal.
A blue print of water treatment Plant too has been prepared by the SPCB for Kathua city and has been preceded to high authority some four years ago for its approval but all this has gone under carpet till now.
Prahlad Singh, Balla Singh, Khem Raj and locals infuriated over the non availability of safe drinking water in the area alleged nothing has been done to provide safe water to the locals. They sought immediate control over industries which discharge chemical discharge in nearby water bodies and also threatened to stage protest at large scale if government fails to redress their genuine demands.
