Early Times Report

Rajouri , Jan 29 : Alleging the passenger fares still the same which were raised about 6 months ago despite huge fail of the prices of petroleum products viz. by about rupees Rs 8-10 per liter, the series of protest demonstrations were held in Rajouri and its adjoining areas in which protestors demanded slashing of transport fares/ freight rates following slashing of fuel price and added the unholy nexus of transporters is fleecing the innocent consumers. In this connection several protests demonstrations were held by the inhabitants of various areas, tehsils during last few days demanding to reduce the passenger fares at earliest. They alleged that the concerned authorities having an unholy nexus with the private transporters are ignoring the genuyien issue and the general public have made a 'scapegoat' and to stand at losers' end as the transporters have been charging fare at their own. In this connection inhabitants of Prori-Gujjaran held a mass protest demonstration on Thursday and blocked the Rajouri-Budhal road for more than 2 hours. The protesters raising slogans against local administration and Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) alleged that instead taking fixed fare by the authorities between Rajouri and Prori Gujjran the owner of passenger vehicles charging excessive fare. They alleged that the matter has been taken several times with the ARTO and district administration but they doled out only hollow promises and people didn't get any relief in this regard.
Basharat Khan, Mohd Hussain and other protesters said that Shammi Kumar, ARTO was apprised about the matter several times but for the reasons best known to him he failed to take any concrete step in this regard forcing the people to hold a protest demonstration.
When contacted by Early Times, Shammi Kumar,ARTO said that to increase or decrease the fare is not in his capacity. "It is the State cabinet/state government to take decision in this matter. Government order is being implemented by Transport Commissioner and lower authorities, he said, adding, "as for as, complaints are concerned, no body/organization approached me in writing. "If I will get any written complaint it will be forwarded to the higher authorities," said ARTO Rajouri.
"One cannot compare the rate of Tata Sumo (Taxi) with passenger bus which obviously is less than that of Taxi and people ought to understand this fact and complaint about excess charges by the Taxi owners, he added.
