Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 29 : Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party chairman Harsh Dev Singh today said that the US President Barack Obama's visit has no doubt given a fresh impetus to Indo - US strategic relationship but the net results and gains of the visit need to be debated. He said that the reported breaking of Logjam on civil nuclear deal and opening of fields for US firms to bid for Indian projects need to be analysed in the proper perspective especially in a situation where-in the agreement to this end had been deadlocked for six years. He said that nuclear deal was held up for the last few years due to suppliers liability law passed in 2010 which provided a cover for nuclear accidents, fixed the liability of suppliers and safeguarded the interests of Indian citizens. "Before removal of supplier liability clause, the NDA govt. ought to have recalled the horrifying experiences of Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the helplessness of the successive Indian Government to pin the blame on the private companies that reaped huge profits for themselves and refused to share the responsibilities for the much needed safeguards", Singh said and added that the event of a nuclear accident in the present times, the impact would be for more severe and disastrous than the two and a half decade old Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Singh said that US President had further pointed out in the conference attended by Top CEOs from both the countries that " of all America's imports from the world, about 2percent come from India and of all America's exports to the world just over 1percent go to India. He said that India had already seen presidents and Prime Ministers who came from humble backgrounds. Making a special mention of Lal Bhadur Shastri, he said that he too had a very ordinary background but never indulged in self-flattery or self praise and despite being the Prime Minister of the country rode on a bicycle providing the greatest example of political uprightness, honesty and sincerity.
