Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 29 : Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) State Secretary, Partap Singh Jamwal has expressed concern over the dying tradition of Jammu region in general and Nagbani Mela in particular. He alleged successive governments have ignored the culture and tradition of Jammu region from beginning due to their Kashmir Centric approach.
"Celebration of Nagbani Mela started on a historic day when Karan Singh got birth in the royal family of his highness Late Maharaja Hari Singh and became a tradition with the passage of time. It was celebrated with great enthusiasm upto the princely rule in the State with massive participation of farmers, business holders, other stake holders but after the signing of instrument of accession by his highness Late Maharaja Hari Singh with the Union of India on October 26, 1947, the approach for the same changed as Kashmir based leaders didn't bother to strengthen the knots of Dogra culture," said Partap Singh. He that the Mela remained a source of income for many villages including Marh, Sangrampur, Gajansoo, Halka, Durgo Chack, Koh Manhasan, Patoli, Domana, Nagbani, Raipur, Barnai, Kot Bhalwal, Mishriwala, Garhi and other villages in two constituencies viz-a-viz Raipur Domana and Marh Constituency as thousands of villagers used to run their stalls of different items for earning their livelihood.
He lamented that of the establishment of a democratic set-up and attaining power by Kashmiri rulers, everything changed as with every passing year, the public started suffering in the hand of administration which failed to provide basic amenities like water, roads, electricity and other facilities. He said this negligent attitude of the authorities is a major jolt to the pristine cultural heritage of Dogras of Jammu region. He further made a fervent appeal to the Department of information to highlight the importance of this historical mela through newspapers, electronic channels, pamphlets, brochure to encourage the youth of Jammu towards their cultural heritage and its preservation.
Partap also appealed Governor NN Vohra to personally intervene into the matter to safeguard the district cultural identity of Dogras of Jammu region. He also forwarded a letter to Governor regarding the safeguard of the district cultural identity of Dogras and upliftment of the dying tradition of Jammu region in general and Nagbani Mela in particular.
