Jammu, Jan 29 : Teachers Guild Jammu and Kashmir (TGJK) demanded to include disaster risk reduction as a separate subject in school syllabus of all levels in Jammu and Kashmir State for the purpose the trainings should start a joint venture without any delay and prepare the framework for review and opinion from educationists, parents and general public. Teachers Guild Jammu and Kashmir held meeting under the state president Nasir Ahmed Qurashi. The meeting was attended by all the members of Teachers Guild besides teachers of various educational institutions of Jammu district. Addressing the gathering, Qurashi said that the State falls in such zones of India, where natural disasters like floods, snowstorms, earthquakes, winds, landslides, thundering, lightning and cloudbursts are occurred frequently and last year's natural calamity broke all the records of previous disasters. He said no doubt that such disasters are an act of God but there is a role of human being too. "There is lack of knowledge about respect, importance and safety of science, geography, geology, environment, forests, climatic changes and water resources, but there is also lack of awareness regarding preparedness, management and mitigation whenever terrestrial and celestial calamities occurred," he stated. He said that the last year's disaster claimed hundreds of lives and also destroyed properties worth millions in entire state due to non-availability of disaster risk reduction units. Even the well-educated citizens were seen helpless. In many areas the untiring efforts of Army, Police, Air Force, Civil Defence, National Disaster Response Force and appreciable services of brave heart volunteers has become the victim of ineffectiveness and mismanagement. He said that the teachers and students are very important members of our society and through them we reach to the parents, VEC members, SMDCs, PTAs and MTAs members and with the help of all these, we cover the whole society. So, it is necessity of the time that the teachers and students should be aware about the disaster management and disaster risk reduction through school curriculum. He further said that Disaster Risk Reduction should also be a part of In-service Teachers Training Programme and D.Ed., B.Ed and M.Ed. courses so that the teachers should be able to teach it to the students from elementary to higher levels.
