Without reason Pak is peeved over Indo-US ties
1/29/2015 11:36:02 PM
As was expected Islamabad is upset over the new equation between India and the US.It is perturbed over the assurance given to India on continued assistance for boosting growth in the sectors of industry, agriculture and in exports which could make India emerge as a super power in South Asian region. And if Pakistan is unhappy over the new dimensions in the Indo-US relations it is but natural because during the last 70 years Pakistan has never made any attempt at promoting cordial ties with India.Instead it has kept on needling India on many fronts. Besides having fought four wars, including that in Kargil, Pakistan has caused immense damage to India's basic infrastructure by having launched proxy war against India. All in the name of Kashmir Pakistan has been trying to harm India and its people in ways known to an enemy country only. Hence if Islamabad is unhappy over the new chapter Modi and Obama have written in the Indo-US relations during the three-day visit of the American President to New Delhi it is understandable. It is expected because Pakistan does not want peace and progress in India. It knows that with US aid India could register faster growth in its economy and in its defence sector. And that is the reason for Islamabad to find excuses for fulminating against the agreements reached between New Delhi and Washington. It is but natural for Pakistan to feel Peeved over the breakthrough in the operationalisation of the Indo-US nuclear deal and wishes to describe the deal as a move for "political and economic expediencies" which would have a "detrimental" impact on deterrence stability in South Asia. Hours after US President Barack Obama concluded his unprecedented second visit to India, Pakistan Prime Minister's Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz opposed India's bid for membership to the 48-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and a permanent seat in the UN Security Council for which Obama pledged to help India.Pakistan claims that the operationalisation of Indo-US nuclear deal for political and economic expediencies would have a detrimental impact on deterrence stability in South Asia. Pakistan reserves the right to safeguard its national security interests. During his three-day visit, Obama held wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as both countries broke a seven-year logjam to operationalise a landmark civil nuclear deal, besides enhancing defence and trade ties.Apart from clearing the obstacles for the implementation of the civil nuclear deal, President Obama reaffirmed the US' position that India is ready for NSG membership. Close equation that Modi has developed with Obama too has remained upalatable for Pakistan because Islamabad has fears that with Obama's backing India could make new strides in nuclear and missile technology which may not leave any scope for Pakistan to needle India. Hitherto, Pakistan has been creating one problem or the other for India on the assumption that India is not having strong defence setup. It has fears that once aid quantum, military and non-military, from Washington to New Delhi increased India may pose a severe threat to Pakistan. And those in Pakistan who nurse such fears are mistaken. They need to know that strong and stable India can be in the interests of India. They should know that India has been always keen to promote cordial ties with Pakistan and in this connection New Delhi has reopened channels of dialogue with Islamabad. These channels of dialogue were shut the moment Pakistan and its agencies carried out terrorist strikes against India.Hence,It is in the interests of Pakistan to reciprocate India's hand of friendship.
