Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Jan 29: People have demanded a tunnel from TP Sadna to Tangdhar in Kupwara district of north Kashmir in view of the problems being faced by them during winters.
Heavy snowfall on higher reaches in Kashmir not only paralysed normal life on Wednesday but slippery roads have become dangerous for people in Tangdhar area.
8 inches of snow was recorded in Tangdhar area, whereas Sadna top and its adjoining areas got maximum of 2 feet snow on Wednesday, sources said.
Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Baghbella in Tangdhar, told Early Times over the phone that heavy snowfall on higher reaches of this border district had left people handicapped and disconnected them from the district headquarter.
Moderate snowfall going on since Wednesday night has hit normal life in this border area, with electricity and water supply snapped in most parts.
However, authorities have managed to restore electricity supply to other parts of Tangdhar constituency only this morning, while people remained confined to their homes as the roads are slippery and are covered by heaps of snow, sources informed.
Another local resident of Tangdhar said, "We appeal to the government to make some appropriate arrangements for the people of Tangdhar area and if tunnel is made from TP to Tangdhar it will shorten the distance of 40 kms.
"Especially during winters, we face many problems and these snowbound area remains cut off for more than one month. There are almost fifty two villages in Tangdhar area and this tunnel will help us in all respects thoroughout the year," he said.
"With the help of this tunnel, we will remain connected with the district headquarter and rest of the valley, otherwise we will have to stay indoors in our houses for months," he added.
Meanwhile, Early Times has learnt that authorities have issued a high danger avalanche warning for higher reaches of the valley including Tangdhar, Keran, Karma and Uri in North Kashmir and have asked people not to venture on steep slopes till this evening.
Sources said people living in these snowbound areas have been requested to take precautions and not to venture on steep slopes.
