bhaderwah, Jan 30: Krishi Vigyan Kendra Doda of SKUAST-J organized three training programmes for the field functionaries of Department of Horticulture, Jammu here today. According to press release, the training programmes entitled management of unfruitfulness in apple, management of fruit drop in walnut and training and pruning in apple of one day each from January 28 to 30, were organized by Dr. R.S. Bandral, Programme Co-ordinator of KVK Doda, keeping in view the problems being faced by the orchardists of this region. Dr. Mahital Jamwal, Scientist and Incharge of Regional Horticulture Research Sub-station, Bhaderwah of SKUAST-J in the training programmes discussed about various environmental and physiological factors causing unfruitfulness in apple and suggested their remedial measures. Apart from timely management of several cultural practices including training and pruning, he emphasized upon the use of good pollinizers in the apple orchards and use of hormones like gibberellic acid and naphthalene acetic acid to increase fruit set and to reduce drop of fruitlets. He demonstrated the participants about training and pruning techniques in apple for obtaining optimum quality and quantity of fruits from the tree. He suggested timely application of manures and fertilizers to the trees and use of fungicides like Bordeaux mixture and copper oxychloride after pruning to maintain the health of the trees. In another training, Dr. Jamwal elaborated to the participants factors responsible for fruit drop in walnut. He discussed about pollination, flowering and fruiting behaviour in walnut and suggested control measures to reduce fruit drop in walnut. The trainings were organized under the guidance of Dr. K.S. Risam, Director Extension of SKUAST Jammu. Sixteen field functionaries and officers of Department of Horticulture, Jammu attended the training programmes including Mr. Abid Hussain, HDO Bhaderwah, and Mr. Rahat Bashir, HDO Doda. Dr. Rohit Sharma, Dr. Narender Paul, Dr. Munish Sharma and Dr. Amitesh Sharma, scientists of RHRSS Bhaderwah and KVK Doda contributed in managing and conducting the trainings successfully. |
