Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 30: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's promise of establishing cultural centers; one each in Jammu and Kashmir for the Gujjars, Bakarwals and Pahari-Speaking communities is yet to be implemented on ground as state government has failed to identify suitable land though Rs. 14 Cr have been released 4 years ago by Union government. As per sources, after the announcement made by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in between June 7-8, 2010, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held a review meeting with the representatives of the three communities i.e. Gujjars, Bakarwals and Pahari speaking community and proposed to construct two cultural centers- one each at Jammu and Srinagar but the idea was widely opposed by the representatives of the all the communities as they demanded separate centers for their communities for better representation. Sources further said that Omar, later on gave the responsibility of identifying the land for these cultural centers to the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) and Srinagar Development Authority (SDA). In the meantime, Jammu and Kashmir Gujjar Desh Charitable Trust also proposed to provide land for the same but neither JDA or SDA nor J&K Gujjar Desh Charitable Trust could identify the land for the same till date. Sources added that former Forest Minister Mian Altaf had also intervened to construct the same in Ganderbal and had proposed to provide forest land in Ganderbal but the same was not accepted by the representatives of any of the communities owing to which the ambitious project is still in thin air. Javaid Rahi, Chief Editor of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages appealed to the Governor N N Vohra to construct these cultural centers within the premises of Cultural Academy in Jammu and Kashmir. "Cultural Academy has enough space for the construction of cultural centers in Jammu as well as Kashmir. With the construction of cultural centers, research centers will be also made functional. So I appeal to the Governor for his intervention to construct the same within cultural academy premises to utilize the unspent money", said Rahi.
