JAMMU, Feb 1: University of Jammu (JU) won the inaugural match of the IIIrd Christmas Soccer Championship, organised by J&K Police in collaboration with Christian Sports Organisation at GGM Science College ground, here today. In the opening tie, JU trounced Khalsa Club 6-1. Manoj (fourth), Anchal (17th), Raza (29th), Dharam (47th), Gagan (50th) and Anchal (55th) scored for the winning team while Vinay reduced the margin from Khalsa Club. The inaugural match officiated by the technical penal comprising Harnit Singh, Ranjay Kumar, Javed Ahmed and Reroz Ahmed. Earlier, the competition declared open by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Jammu-Kathua Range, Shakeel Ahmed Beig, who was chief guest. Chairman of Christian Sports Organisation, Fr. Kuriakose and Director Sports and Physical Education, JU, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau were guests of honour while manager Federal Bank, Parmod Kumar was special guest. Speaking to the gathering, the chief guest encouraged the youth towards sports amidst assurance for support in their endevour to excel in games. He said that sports play an important role in keeping the young men physically fit and mentally strong. The DIG complemented the players for taking part in the competition and wished them success. In all, 12 teams are taking part in this knock-out event involving colleges and local clubs. The members of the organising committee, who were also present in the inaugural function included SSP PTS Kathua, Sanjeev Khajuria, DDP RPHQ Jammu, Parshotam Sharma, Nircodemus, Markas Gill, Aijaz Malik, Rajesh Gill, Victor Sotra, Kuldeep Handoo, Asif Gill, David Matoo and Gagan Kumar. |
