A day after chillai kalan ended, Kashmir receives snow fall

KUPWARA, Feb 1: With the end of Chillai-Kalan on Saturday Kashmir Valley received fresh snow fall on Sunday morning including north Kashmir were maximum hilly areas witnessed the driest winter. The Deputy Commissioners in north Kashmir have directed the concerned officers to keep all the requisite precautionary measures in place in order to avert any untoward incident.
Fresh snowfall was recorded on higher reaches in north Kashmir including the tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Kupwara area of the Valley.
Early Times have learnt from sources that the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kupwara has issued advisory in avalanche prone areas like Tangdhar, Machil, Chowkibal, Keran and Karnah which are above 2500 meters altitude.
The district administration has advised the people not to venture in avalanche prone areas during the period, besides keep cleaning the snow deposition from roof tops of the houses and bankers to avoid any untoward incident during the snowfall, sources said.
People are also advised not to occupy and temporarily evacuate those locations which are under the line of avalanche.
A local resident of Chowkibal Nisar Ahmad Khan told Early Times that heavy snowfall on higher reaches in Tangdhar area has paralysed normal life on Sunday, due to slippery roads vehicles have not seen on the roads throughout the day.
Khan said that 6 to 7 inches of Snow was recorded in Tangdhar area on Sunday evening, whereas Sadna top and other adjacent areas got maximum of 2 feet snow on Sunday.
However a senior official from Deputy Commissioners Office Kupwara said there could be a moderate rains or snow on higher reaches of North Kashmir's Kupwara district.
As of now main Kupwara town has received the highest snowfall of about five inches during the night and the mercury settled at a low of minus 0.1 degree Celsius, up by over three degrees from minus 3.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday, official said.
Meanwhile Deputy Commissioner Baramulla has also directed the concerned officers to be in readiness and to activate their manpower and machinery and ensure that there is no disruption of essential services, power supply, water supply, health care services in the district.
The concerned officers have also been impressed upon to establish Control Rooms and the Phone Numbers must be notified for the general public.
