JAMMU, Feb 1: J&K is faced with the shortage of IPS officers as 21 of them, including three ADGs, seven IGPs and other officers of SSP and SP ranks, are on central deputation. Some of them are working in their own states and don't want to return to J&K. The state at present has a total of 99 IPS officers. Four of them were allotted J&K cadre in the recent past. They are undergoing training in Sardar Vallabh Bhai National Police Academy. Saji Mohan, a senior IPS officer of J&K cadre is booked in an alleged case of narcotics smuggling. He has been suspended from his service. Due to the shortage of officers created by those IPS officers who are on deputation to the Centre, the state police working has been affected. In their absence, junior officers are discharging their duties, according to police sources. The state had a total nine officers of ADG rank and three of them were on central deputation. While S K Misra is on deputation since 2008, Gopal Reddy is on deputation in Andhra Pradesh since 2011 and D R Doley is on central deputation since June 2014. The department has a total of 27 officers of IGP rank and seven of them are on central deputation. They include R R Swain (since November 2006), Pankaj Saxena (since August 2010), L D Mohanti (since 2011), S D Singh (since March 2011), S S Khandare (since February 2014), T Nambiyal (since April 2012) and M K Sinha (since September 2012).
