Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 21 : Participation of a mainstream leader in a recent congregation of Jamaat-e-Islami at Jammu has caused fissures in the rank and file of the socio-political organization. It continues to be a hot debate in the party circles as on date. The problem for the party started when Engineer Abdul Rashid, who won the recent assembly election from Langate spoke in the annual congregation of the party for the Jammu district conducted in the Rajinder Bazar area. "The move of the party to allow a mainstream leader to be invited to the party programme has created doubts in the minds of the workers of the party. It is totally against the basic principles of the party," said Aashiq Ahmad from Budgam while talking to Early Times. Aashiq said that this step has sent a wrong signal across the state as this development according to him is against the ideology of the party. The rank and file of the party have been let down as nobody had imagined a mainstream leader addressing a Jamaat gathering, he said. Like Aashiq there are many workers of the party who were taken by surprise as they came to know about the participation of MLA Langate in the annual congregation of the party for the district Jammu. What has shocked the workers of the party that a top leader of the party heaved praises on Engineer Rashid immediately after his speech was over in the party gathering which is thought to be even more insulting move of the party leader. "How a mainstream managed to address Jamaat gathering is absolutely surprising but what was more surprising that a top leader of the party praised the MLA publically immediately after ending his speech," said Javed Ahmad, a Jamaat worker from Srinagar. But top leadership of the party, including the Amir Jamaat Mohammad Abdullah Wani hold different views on this development which has only created only confusions in the minds of the workers of the party. Wani said that they had invited some Hindu scholar but due to his busy schedule he sent Engineer Rashid. He while defending his decision to invited MLA Langate said that Jamaat can invite anybody. He said when the party can invite non-Muslims, what is the harm in inviting Engineer Rashid. When asked about the development, spokesman of the party Advocate Zahid Ali said "I did not take part in the congregation and I have no information about this development."
