Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 21: Civil Society members have castigated the health officials for failing to control the outbreak of Swine Flu in Jammu and Kashmir.
A day after Health officials in Kashmir admitted that H1N1virus had stuck Kashmir in October 2014, a civil society member while talking to Early Times said health officials are merely issuing statements for the sake of formality at present to evade growing public anger against them for their alleged failures but the fact is that Health department has failed at all fronts to handle the Swine flu outbreak in JK. "Failure of Health department has resulted in deaths of people, what were they doing when they were informed about the outbreak of Swine Flu? They issued deceptive statements to hoodwink masses. Officials are responsible for deaths that have occurred due to Swine Flu," added Shakeel Qalandar.
He said that Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK) has taken up an important initiative by starting a helpline which would prove helpful to common masses who are worried for themselves and for the people suffering due to Swine flu outbreak and added that concerned health officials at this crucial point are indulging in a blame game. Pertinently after lot of hue and cry over the spread of Swine Flu in Kashmir from many quarters which so far resulted in death of four people in Kashmir and reportedly one in Jammu division, Health officials on Friday said that H1N1virus had struck Kashmir in October 2014 and till date 96 patients have been tested positive for Swine flu virus. It also came to fore through sources inside SKIMS that still medicines are running short in SKIMS with twelve new cases of Swine Flu reported on Friday at SKIMS, the only testing and curative centre for H1N1 patients in Kashmir division.
Four doctors have also been infected due to lack of facilities at SKIMS and at a time when health officials claim to provide treatment to patients without panicking, SKIMS authorities admitted that 'all required facilities are in place, "4000 N95 masks have been received today and 6000 Tamiflu tablets are expected to be received soon. Sources inside SKIMS said that testing facilities were part of a project which were dedicated for research purpose only and after Swine flu struck Kashmir division testing labs were converted in to diagnostic labs which can manage up to 40 samples a day and keeping in view increasing number of swine flu patients in the institute, authorities may need to send people outside state for testing purpose.
