SRINAGAR, Mar 2 : What former chief minister Omar Abdullah could not do after a month or so following the devastating flood in September last year newly appointed chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed did it with a pen of his stroke. While chairing the first meeting of his council of ministers at Jammu today, Mufti ordered for the setting up of a cabinet sub-committee to look into the grievances of flood affected people. The members of the cabinet sub-committee have been asked to visit Kashmir valley and also Jammu division to assess the damages caused by the devastating flood. The decision to constitute the cabinet sub-committee was taken after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) received feedback from the people of Kashmir that nothing substantial has been done to provide relief to flood affected people. The PDP legislators were briefed by the people that they are going through horrid time after the deluge last year. Both the commoners and the traders have been voicing their concern over the shabby treatment meted out to them by the previous coalition government of National Conference and Congress. Although, Governor Narendra Nath Vohra tried his best to satiate the aspirations and demands of flood affected people, but that turned out to be meagre. During the maiden meeting the cabinet headed by Mufti took stock of the relief and rehabilitation effort mounted by the state government in the wake of devastating flood of September, 2014. The Cabinet decided to constitute a cabinet sub-committee for assessing the situation arising after the devastating flood. Minister in-charge Irrigation and Flood Control Department will head the cabinet sub-committee. The cabinet sub-committee members will visit the affected areas in Central, North and South Kashmir and the worst affected areas in Jammu division to assess the immediate long term needs of the affected population. The other members of the committee include Lal Singh, Dr. Haseeb Drabu, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari and Imran Raza Ansari. The committee has also been tasked to interact with the organizations/associations of the affected traders so that their concerns are addressed immediately.
Following the flood last year the then state government failed to come up to the expectations of the people. The flood affected people accused the government of adding to their miseries and doing nothing for mitigating the sufferings. Areas remained in the flood water for weeks together with public anger mounting like anything. It was due to the inapt handling of the post flood scenario by then government that National Conference could win just three out of the eight seats in the summer capital district of the state. In the previous legislative assembly all the eight seats from Srinagar had been won by National Conference, but in 2014 assembly elections they could win just three seats.
