Mufti buries NC,Congress dream of regaining power
3/3/2015 12:42:21 AM
That the BJP has decided to lend its full
support to the PDP in running the Govern-
ment in Jammu and Kashmir was evident from the way top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, L.K.Advani, Amit Shah, Murli Manohar Joshi and Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, were present when Mufti Mohd. Sayeed and 24 others were administered oath of office by Governor, N.N.Vohra,in Jammu on Sunday. And when the team led by Mufti Mohd. Sayeed was sworn in it marked a burial to the dream of National Conference and the Congress of either retaining power or sharing power or regaining power. Soon after the Assembly election had thrown up a hung House the National Conference and the Congress had adopted various courses for sharing power with the PDP.At one stage Omar Abdullah had offered unconditional support to Mufti Mohd Sayeed for forming the Government which the Mufti had rejected. After that Ghulam Nabi Azad, leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, had mooted the idea of a grand alliance among the PDP,the Congress and the National Conference.Again the Mufti had turned down the idea on the ground that since people had rejected both the NC and the Congress in the Assembly and the Lok Sabha elections. And despite the fact that Omar started kidding and needling Mufti Sayeed while referring to the alliance having been forged years ago Mufti Mohd.Sayeed remained unperturbed and showed patience and resilience in giving a definite shape to the tie-up with the BJP. It was more difficult a task or a cumbersome decision for the PDP leaders to forge an alliance with the BJP than it was for the Sangh Parivaar to frame an alliance with the PDP.The reason being that voters in the Kashmir valley, which is area of influence for the PDP,had rejected the BJP forcing it to draw a blank in the Assembly poll. Hence for the PDP the task was quite difficult to cobble a tie-up with the BJP.No doubt the region of Jammu has a strong vote bank for the BJP which is evident from the way it won 25 out of 37 seats but the PDP too had won three seats and its candidates had not forefeited their deposit in a number of constituencies in the Jammu region thereby indicating that the PDP is not an untouchable for the people of Jammu unlike the BJP which is as good a touch-me-not a flower for the people in the Kashmir valley. Mufti Sayeed too played his cards well by fulfilling his desire in keeping the National Conference away from the seat of power and that should have been the main reason for forging an alliance with the BJP.The second idea behind this alliance was his dream of promoting regional balance and that is apparent from the constitution of the council of ministers. He has given representation to all the three regions. Representation to women,to members of the Sunni,Shia communities, to people belonging to the scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and to the Backward areas. But his hands had been, this time, tight when he could not give representation to Sikhs and Pandits in the Council of Ministers. Agreed that the council of ministers, headed by Mufti Sayeed,is a composite team but what catches one's eyes is the lack of experience on the part of the members from the BJP side.Except Lal Singh, who had defected from the Congress and had been a minister for a number of years, there is no other leader from the BJP who has had experience as a bureaucrat or a minister.Even Dr Nirmal Singh, has had no experience in handling administrative matters since he has been a professor of History. Against this the PDP has experienced members.Mufti Mohd.Sayeed has been a minister, then Union Home Minister and a Chief Minister. When he took the oath in Jammu on Sunday it was for the second time that he was sworn in as Chief Minister. Abdul Rehman Veeri and Javed Musfa Mir have had experience as ministers in 2002 to 2007.Naeem Akhtar has been a former bureaucrat and learned man. So is Haseeb Drabu, who has had the experience as Editor of the Business standard and later as Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Bank. He has been associated with the planning commission. Now it is the prime duty of the BJP-PDP Government to provide a clean, stable Government which could mitigate problems of people .Instead of digging skeletons in the cupboard of the previous NC-Congress Government it would be better for the Mufti to utilize the BJP's support for carrying out development of the state. Let him too, like Modi, initiate steps for ensuring all round "Vikaas" and peace in the state. This is the only mantra that can silence his critics.
