Fresh snowfall damages around 12 structures in Bandipora

BARAMULLA, Mar 2: The fresh snowfall caused further dip in temperature across the Valley and triggered landslides in some areas of Bandipora district of north Kashmir damaging over a dozen structures. The high altitude areas of the Valley including the famous ski resorts of Gulmarg and Tangdhar received heavy snowfall today.According to sources "at least fifteen structures, including residential and commercial establishments, were damaged after a snow avalanche hit a village in Bandipora district of North Kashmir today. Due to snow avalanche at village Sardab, in the jurisdiction of Police Station Tulail, Bandipora, six residential houses and a shop got fully damaged and eight other residential houses got partially damaged, said sources. However, no loss of life was reported as the families were shifted to safer places as a preventive measure, till the last reports came in.
Meanwhile, life across north Kashmir was thrown out of gear due to water logging. Shops and other business establishments were shut and traffic on the roads was skeletal. Majority of the people preferred to stay indoors as roads were submerged in water. Gulmarag ski resort received 2 feet of snow and Sadhna top in Tangdhar areas witnessed the same amount of snow till reports last came in. According to reports, moderate to heavy rainfall was reported in Keran and Tanghdhar areas of Kupwara district from last two days. While as Kupwara town have also witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall. Sources said the continuous rainfall had led to landslides near Chowkibal and Sadna top area along the route which rendered it unsafe for heavy vehicles.
However the stranded passengers of Tangdhar and other Border areas said that due to slippery of roads no vehicle was allowed to move from district headquarters as most of the roads remained cutoff for a day.After continuous snowfall a fresh avalanche warning has been issued in the upper reaches across the north Kashmir. The residents of these areas have been asked not to venture in avalanche prone areas especially in mountainous areas close to the Line of Control.
Early Times has learnt from sources that district authorities issued avalanche warning for the people living in border areas like Karnah, Keran, Tnagdhar, Chowkibal and Machil in Kupwara district, advising them to move about with utmost caution.
People were advised to take precaution and not to venture about in avalanche-prone areas there has been heavy snowfall in the higher reaches from last two days.
However a senior official from Mechanical Division told early times that, "from today morning we have pressed our men and machinery into service on many roads in Kupwara district to clear the snow so that snow does not accumulate on it. The snowfall stopped this morning and we made extensive efforts by putting into service snow cutters, snow sweepers, and other machines to clear the accumulated snow from the roads so that people from border areas will not suffer, said official.
