SRINAGAR, Mar 3: The Mufti government which took oath couple of days back is set to witness the first 'Kashmir Bandh' as the call has been given for the same not by the separatists but by Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers federation (KTMF) against the delay in their rehabilitation following last year's devastating flood. The business community suffered immensely during the deluge in September last year and given the alleged cold response of authorities regarding their rehabilitation, the KTMF has decided to press for their demands through the proposed strike call.
The KTMF has termed the promises of the governments, both at state and centre level as hollow slogans. The leaders of the Federation said that they had high hopes that the coalition leaders at the state and centre level would make a special announcement soon after the oath taking ceremony, but the issue wasn't touched, much to the disappointment of the business community.
KTMF Chairman Mohammad Yaseen Khan said that people at the helm of the affairs at the state and the centre level knew it very well that it is the business community which suffered immensely during the 2014 floods. He said the traders' community still waits for the assistance from the government despite repeated surveys.
"The business community of the valley had a misconception that the government was at their back, but the community continues to be deprived of their basic right of government assistance which as per him is highly regrettable. We have been pushed to the hilt and strike seems to be only option available with us for the time being," said KTMF Chairman.
Khan said that business items worth 30,000 crore rupees was destroyed in the flood. He said the number of shops and other business establishments destroyed during the floods is around 65,000 and 14,000 of these business establishments are missing on the ground. "The miseries for the business community don't end here; there are almost 1,00,000 applications for the construction permission pending in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, but out of these only 2,500 have been considered so for and the rest of the lot is gathering dust, " said KTMF Chairman. Khan said that despite being highest tax payers members of the business community have been left at the mercy of the Almighty Allah with nothing being done for their rehabilitation in post flood scenario. He said that many people lost their job since the business community has failed to stand upon its legs.
