Non-BJP parties plan to upset BJP-PDP alliance
3/4/2015 11:38:56 PM
That the opposition parties in the Lok Sabha
seem to be bent upon disrupting the first
ever political experiment in Jammu and Kashmir which has been conducted the other day by creating a situation which resulted in an alliance between the PDP and the BJP,two parties with conflicting ideologies, became evident when on two days these non-BJP groups tried to disrupt the proceedings of the House demanding that the Parliament adopt a resolution condemning Jammu and Kahsmir Chief Minister,Mufti Mohd. Sayeed's controversial remarks on the just concluded Assembly election in the state.Mufti Sayeed had claimed that the high polling percentage was the result of a conducive atmosphere having been created by separatists, militants and by people from across the border.
When the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, informed the Lok Sabha on Monday and Tuesday that whatever he said about the issue was the view of Prime Minister,Narendra Modi thereby making it clear that the BJP led NDA Government had completely dis-associated itself from the views expressed by the Mufti.Rajnath Singh had gone to the extent of denying Mufti's claim that he had discussed with Modi his views on high polling percentage. In fact the opposition parties had raised a ruckus which had forced the speaker to adjourn the House twice for a brief period.Prime Minister,Narendra Modi, reacted in one sentence by giving credit to people of Jammu and Kahsmir for peaceful poll process.
Yes,the ground realities, that existed in the Kashmir valley during the poll campaign and during the polling, give a different picture,a picture that was quite different from what the Mufti has claimed. If the Mufti claims that separatists created an atmosphere which was conducive for ensuring high polling percentage he does not seem to be right and apart from the JKLF Chief,Mohd.Yasin Mailk, even the Hurriyat Conference (G) has described the Mufti's statement ridiculous and baseless. The hardliners, headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, has stated that they had not been able to enforce their poll boycott call because of the reign of terror having let loose on the separatists. He has said that all senior separatist leaders were either jailed or were placed under house arrest.
He too agrees with Malik in saying that as a result of tight security measures people had no other alternative but to cast their votes. One wishes Geelani to ask a question. Were not the security grid strengthened in 2002 and 2008 elections ?In 2014 election the 46 seats in the Kashmir valley recorded a polling percentage ranging between 58 and 71 which was more than 10 per cent than recorded in 2022 and 2008 polls. This indicates that people did not fully respond to the separatists' call for poll boycott because they were yearning for casting their votes, that could herald a change. And their vote did bring about change.A change with two diaemtrically opposite in thought and outlook deciding to share power.
This is one controversy triggered by the PDP leadership. Another relates to the support some PDP MLAs gave to Er Rashid,an independent MLA,who demanded that the Parliament attack convict,Afzal Guru's,remains ,be brought back to Kashmir.Guru was hanged in Tihar jail in 2013. That the PDP leadership has given credit to separatists, militants and agencies across the border for having created a conducive atmosphere which resulted in high percentage of polling and the PDP's support to Engineer Rashid's demand for bringing back to Kashmir remains of Afzal Guru is a political trick cannot be denied.Previous NC-Congress Government, especially Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, had attracted anger from people for the way his administration ordered a crackdown on separatists for ensuring peaceful poll process which recorded high polling percentage.
He had invited bigger anger for what people alleged was his failure to prevent the authorities in New Delhi from executing Guru. At that stage the PDP leaders had held Omar Abdullah responsible for not having initiated any move for delaying execution of Guru or for providing timely infomation to the family members of Afzal Guru or for forcing the central Government for sending the mortal remains of Guru to his family members. The PDP leadership is aware of the level of peoples' anger against the National Conference which has been proved by the way the NC failed to win a single seat in the Lok Sabha election and could win only 15 Assembly seats against 28 in 2008 poll.Hence the PDP leadership wishes to start its innings on a note of reconciliation but in the process there is a danger that its alliance with the BJP may get snapped. Hence it is the duty of the PDP leadership to tread the thorny path carefully and cautiously lest the arrangement should end in a disaster.
