Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 19: The politically backed mafia involved in supplying substandard pesticides and Fertilizers to Kashmir markets continues to enjoy immunity in this government too as officials allow sale and Purchase of pesticides and fertilizers without testing in labs.
At a time when the department of agriculture claims that 2500 MT of various kinds of fertilizers were supplied to valley, besides 900 lakh liters of spray oil, 90 MT of pesticides and 17230 liters of insecticides, However according to credible Sources pesticides and Fertilizers available in markets were allowed by officials concerned without checking their validity and authenticity in laboratories before Farmers could use them in their Orchards.
Sources said that all varieties of Pesticides and Fertilizers including first tree spray of this season supplied to Kashmir of different companies like Fil Industries, Rallies India, TaTa Chemical, Syngenta, Bayor, Cheminova and Anu Products having an approximate annual turnover of Rupees 30 to 40 Crores from Jammu and Kashmir were allowed to Store, Sell and Purchase without testing them in Laboratories as per previous practice.
"This system needs Complete over hauling, see what happens, every Year samples of Pesticides/Fertilizers are taken from Market for Testing Purpose at SKUAST and almost every year minimum 20 to 30% samples are found of substandard nature in testing but they were never banned so far, plus, officials took 12 samples from Market in the Month of March and out of total 12 they send arround 5- 6 Samples to Faridabad for testing but receive back test reports in the Month of June or July that is middle of the season, until this time Orchardists cannot wait and use Pesticides of any nature available in the market and despite results of apple Production are now vivid for one and all, but system is yet to change."Sources added
Sources said that hundreds of Varieties of Fertilizers which actually are packs of "FRIED SOIL" with no nutrient effect available in Markets these days does not fall under insecticide act of India 1968 and F.C.O 1985, thereby cannot be allowed for Business purposes in Kashmir and despite these Products are banned in states like Punjab and Haryana but to a deep rooted politically backed official-distributor Mafia, all such Products are easily available in Kashmir Markets.
Sources also added that testing laboratories of Lal Mandi Srinagar which were washed away by Floods of last year are completely defunct this year and there is every chance that Kashmir Markets will see increase in sale and Purchase of Substandard pesticides and Fertilizers.
Pertinently during a meeting recently which was attended among others by then Director Agriculture Kashmir, Director Sericulture, Director Floriculture, Director Horticulture, Director Research SKUAST-Kashmir and other Divisional Level officers of Agriculture and allied departments, The Director Agriculture informed the Commissioner that so far 2500 MT of various kinds of fertilizer have been supplied by various companies in the Valley, whereas 3800 MT are in transit and are being imported to Valley within this month. He was also told that as of now 900 lakh liters of spray oil, 90 MT of pesticides and 17230 liters of insecticides have been brought in the Valley and the same is available for the orchardists. Meanwhile despite Repeated attempts, Minister for Agriculture and Production, Ghulam Nabi Lone did not pick up the phone.
