Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 20: PDP-BJP government seemed united but NC and Congress despite being together in opposition were not on same page over Kathua terror attack in the Jammu and Kashmir legislative council today.
As soon as the house met for day's business, while Congress lodged strong protest and later, staged walk-out from the legislative council; NC legislators neither came in support of the Congress MLCs nor spoke even a single word to condemn the Kathua terror attack. The concern of the NC MLCs was rising road accidents and the situation that has arisen due to the continuous rain and snow in erstwhile district Doda. They neither spoke about the incident nor sought a discussion on the issue of terror attack in Kathua.
NC MLCs led by ex-Home Minister Sajjad Kitchloo and Dr. Shehnaz Ganai raised the pitch over the issue of road accidents, with Ganai making special mention of news reports appearing in various newspapers. But she had nothing to say about the Kathua terror attack which took place in the wee hours of the morning. Congress MLCs led by the party's Chief Spokesman Ravinder Sharma and ex-Minister Jugal Kishore led the charge against PDP-BJP government over the Kathua terror attack.
Sharma sought to know from the government the steps they were taking to counter the Pakistan sponsored terror in Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to Congress led UPA government; Sharma said "We had clearly told Pakistan that talks and terror cannot go together. But your policy is not clear. You talk of 56 inch chest, shake hands with Pakistan, allow separatists to hold talks and parlays with Pakistan and raise just noise whenever there is a terror attack."
He added that Kathua terror attack exposed the fragile system which is in existence in the state. "We want to know response of BJP since it is this party which talked of tough measures and countering Pakistani sponsored terror by adopting strong counter-insurgency measures. What has happened to the iron hand policy now? Today BJP stands exposed before the people of Jammu and Kashmir since they are part of the coalition government which wants revocation of AFSPA, release of dangerous terrorists and talks with Pakistan for resolution of Kashmir issue," Sharma said.
He was equally supported by another Congress MLC Jugal Kishore Sharma who too was heard making similar statements. Jugal wanted the state government to come out with a statement, giving details of the measures it took after the terrorists attacked the police station in Rajbagh area of Kathua. "Let the government come out with a statement on this attack. We want to know response of the state government."
The two were soon joined by other Congress MLCs namely Naresh Gupta, Sham Lal Bhagat and Ghulam Nabi Monga. They began raising the slogans in the well of the house while the NC MLCs were making noise from their chairs over rising traffic accidents. Congress MLCs gathered in the well and raised slogans against the state government. Though nothing was heard in the din but they kept protesting for around 5 minutes.
MLCs of PDP and BJP countered the opposition by referring to 120 killings which took place in Srinagar in the year 2010. Surinder Choudhary of PDP alongwith Yasir Reshi were seen raising high pitched noise while rebutting charges of Congress MLCs. They were supported by their colleagues from PDP and the newly elected first timer BJP MLCs.
Noisy scenes continued for around 16 minutes after which Chairman Amrit Malhotra ordered marshals to remove Congress MLCs from the house. This brought order back in the house and the question hour began.
