Masarat Alam is last hope in Valley
Hurriyat and Kashmiri youth

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 27: Serious moves are afoot in Kashmir to convey an impression that Kashmiri youth want independence from India all at once. Those who have unleashed this type of movement in the Valley say that "politics in Kashmir has been changing for years now" and "the visible change has been the political awakening of a new generation in the state". "Every day, I meet young Kashmiris and listen to their views on politics and society. These days it is not surprising at all to hear the young talk about how and why the separatist leadership is becoming irrelevant for the common people with every passing day. The only reason that is keeping their identity alive is the absence of any other leading power in the Valley. On the ground, one can easily understand why an 18-year-old boy relates more to Masarat Alam than any other leader. As everywhere, in Kashmir, too the young people want things to move quickly.
They abhor delays," says the one who wants the Kashmir issue to be settled all at once as per the aspirations of the radicalized Kashmiri youth. Kashmiri youth, he claims, are unhappy with separatists because they have failed to build up pressure on Pakistan and India to solve Kashmir issue. "The long spell of dissatisfaction and periodical failures of the separatists to build pressure on Pakistan and India to solve the Kashmir issue have brought the youth to this point. There may be some good speakers and thinkers who would bluntly reject the emergence of such a shift but in Kashmir, experience has paid very little. People don't feel satisfied by something that has been achieved years ago. The youth want change. This desire has led to major tectonic shifts in the ideological positions too. The fight of Kashmiris against India has been taken over by these young people who dislike the word 'linger'. You can call them restless but when a person grows up in an open-air prison, the degree of restlessness increases day by day," he says.
The message of those who say that the Kashmiri youth have fed up with the traditional separatist leadership in Kashmir and that Masarat Alam, a terrorist who was responsible for more than 100 killing in the Valley in 2010, is loud and clear.
Their message is that the Kashmiri Valley stands highly radicalized and if peace is to be maintained in Kashmir, the solution to the so-called Jammu and Kashmir problem has to be in accordance with the wishes of the radicalized Kashmiri youth. It is not difficult to understand those who have started speaking for Kashmiri youth. What they have started saying might be true. The worst part of the whole situation is that they are getting adequate space in the prominent sections of print media. That they are enjoying favorable media must make the concerned authorities in New Delhi take some remedial measures, failing which things could assume alarming proportions in the Valley. It's time to act and act very fast to nip the evil.
