Days without Electricity in Kishtwar: Potential- Wasted Potential
3/28/2015 9:16:53 PM

Dr wajid Ali Kelam

Pulled open the shades and let the sunlight pour into
my dark room. “I can use natural light for a solid 10 hours
,so this won’t be too bad, “I thought— my plan was to  go without electricity for 24 hours to better empathize with the hundreds of thousand people of my home district Kishtwar who have been experiencing no electricity for the past 10 days.
Giving up 24 hours of electricity doesn’t seem like a big sacrifice, considering that quarter a million people have been plunged into the darkness. I wanted to do this to inspire others to support the cause, which could bring power to a quarter million people in the district Kishtwar.
I had planned those 24 hours, but unfortunately nothing went according to the plan. I couldn’t take a bath for there was no hot water in the geyser which runs on electricity. I had to be content with just a bowl of oats in the breakfast for I couldn’t taste my favorite cuisine in the breakfast as it requires refrigeration. After breakfast I started my office work. I had multiple assignments, to add to a long list of assignments, I had to prepare class notes for my students. I started by sifting through stacks of notes on my desk and scribbling words into my notebook. It was all going well till I started writing an article for a newspaper. I like to type my essays, naturally I grabbed my laptop, but quickly it realized me that I couldn’t use it, instead I pick up a notebook and a pen and proceeded to write 1000 word article. Few hours later, after getting frustrated and disinterested, I put the notebook down. But when get courage and started writing, It took me hours to write these words.
Over the course of day, several of my friends had called me up, but I was not available to take their calls as my mobile phone battery has already drained and there was no provision to charge my phone. As time passes, I start feeling embarrassed and felt bad that my friends couldn’t communicate with me since last so many days and I asked myself—— that are we really living in 21st century?
But that’s what this experience was all about: potential-wasted potential, specifically. As the day passes, the evening was on my door and there was no light— my house was under the shadow of darkness—— and all of my family members assembled in a single room, burn a candle light calling everyone to finish the dinner— As everyone rushes I had some slices of bread and raw fruit in the dinner because I couldn’t eat my favorite oven-roasted chicken because of my pledge not to use electricity for a day. I ended my ONE day without electricity thinking about all the things I could have accomplished that day. Instead, I sat in the dark which irritated me as it never look like earlier since the whole night my electronic devices are emitting the shady light throughout the night as and when I put them on charging— until I finally called it quit and shut my eyes, it was already 1:30 mid night.
Without electricity, I was unproductive and powerless— When I wake up late in the morning, I asked myself “Am I the only person who didn’t fulfill his potential in a single day without electricity”, the answer is no— as millions of people in our country are still living without electricity and didn’t fulfill their potential and endure hardships every single day because of electricity deficit.
At the end I reached at the conclusion that “There is no exaggeration if I say that- Where there is light, there is life”.
