Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 29 : Yet to overcome the shock of last year's devastating flood, threat of another flood is looming over the Kashmir Valley as uninterrupted rains lashed the region on Sunday.
Water level in the Jhelum was rising till late Sunday. According to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, at 5 pm, the level at Sangam in Anantnag was 14.25 ft, Ram Munshi Bagh (Srinagar) 14 ft and Asham (Bandipora) 8.75 ft.
Officials, however, insisted that there was no need to panic. Sonam Lotus, director of the meteorological office, said that although there has been a rise in the water level of rivers and streams in the Kashmir Valley due to overnight incessant rains, there is no reason to worry.
"Every downpour and precipitation does not bring a flood. There is little likelihood of any flood in the Valley because of the current western disturbance. There will be a decrease in precipitation tomorrow onwards.
"Another western disturbance is likely to hit the state on April 2 but that is going to be weaker than the present one. Therefore, I do not think we are facing a flood threat this time although mountain streams need to be watched for any sudden rise that can cause local damage and trigger landslides," Lotus told a news agency.
Meanwhile, the government said they have kept men and machinery on alert to tackle any possible crisis
Minister of State for Irrigation and Flood Control, Abdul Majeed Padder said that all the concerned officials from the level of a Chief engineer to casual workers have been asked to be ready on alert points.
"We know what happened during previous government which resulted in devastation of whole state when floods hit Jammu and Kashmir. So we have learnt lessons and are firm that mistakes of previous government won't be allowed to repeat. If we feel to take help of Army and other rescue forces, we won't waste time in approaching them," Padder said.
Replying to a question, Padder said that the government at present is working on temporary filling of breaches caused by last year floods and the process was on.
Police has also set up a Special Control Room in Police Control Room Srinagar to help people in situation arising due to incessant rainfall.
People are requested to contact on following numbers in case of any emergency: 0194-2452138, 0194-2474040, 0194-2450946. People can also send Whatsapp messages/pictures on mobile number 9858222333, an official handout said.
Meanwhile, the authorities announced that all educational institutes up to Class 8 would remain closed till April 1 in view of incessant rains that have led to a flood-like situation.
"Schools in Valley shall remain closed on March 30 and 31 due to bad weather conditions," Director School Education, Showkat Ahmad Beigh said. The schools will re-open on Wednesday, April 1, he said. Also, all board and university examinations scheduled for Monday have been postponed.
"All board exams scheduled forMonday, March 30, have been postponed due to bad weather and fresh date will be announced separately," Secretary BOSE, Veena Pandita said.
Kashmir University has also postponed all exams scheduled for March 30 and March 31.
"All examinations of University of Kashmir both at PG and UG level which were scheduled to be held on 30th and 31st March, 2015 are hereby postponed," said Abid Qadri, Public Relations Officer of the varsity. Fresh dates for these examinations shall be notified separately, he said.
