Betraying the people's mandate

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 31: Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Nawang Rigzin Jora has, it seems, turned ultra secular. He is attacking the BJP, which created history in the Lok Sabha elections by winning the lone Ladakh Lok Sabha seat for the first time in 2014, but got decimated in the assembly elections the same year. And he is also lambasting the PDP. He is accusing the BJP of betraying the mandate the people of Jammu province gave in the assembly elections.
The only Common Minimum Programme (CMP of this government is to stay in power by hook or crook, he is saying almost on a daily basis, and charging the BJP with giving up on core agenda of abrogation of Article 370, citizenship rights to the West Pakistan Refugees, Delimitation Commission and the rights of 1947, 1965 and 1971 PoJK refugees as well as promise of three seats for Kashmiri Pandits and five for PoK refugees. "Despite having 28 seats (BJP 25 plus three allies), BJP insisted neither on rotational Chief Ministership nor on equal berths in the Cabinet. They (in this case BJP) have decided to play second fiddle to PDP after having fooled the people of Jammu and garnering their votes in the name of Jammu empowerment," Jora has been saying.
Of course, the charges levelled by Jora against the BJP cannot be brushed aside. The charges are well founded. It is an altogether a different story that the party to which he belongs never missed any opportunity to damage the interests of Jammu province and the people it houses. Its attitude towards Jammu province was no different from that of the BJP and it also played second fiddle to the National Conference between 2009 and 2014. Notwithstanding the fact that the BJP has betrayed the mandate it got in the last assembly elections, the Jora's attack on the BJP is politically motivated. He is only exploiting the situation the BJP has created by surrendering the interests of Jammu province. His aim is to retrieve the political space the Congress lost to the BJP in Jammu province in 2014. The BJP candidates defeated the both the Congress candidates in the Lok Sabha election and also captured many assembly seats which were earlier held by the Congress.
Significantly, Jora is more critical of the PDP. "The PDP is much worse. After exploiting the fear factor of Modi among the Kashmiri masses, Mufti Sayeed ended up piggybacking the BJP into the government and seat of power," Jora has been saying. The other day, he even went to the extent of blaming Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for giving entry to Hindutva forces into Kashmir. "Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed cannot escape the blame of giving entry to Hindutva forces" into the Kashmir Valley," he said. By the Hindutva forces, he obviously meant the BJP.
It's true that the PDP, like the NC, the Congress and the separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, had opposed the BJP tooth and nail during the election campaign and urged the Kashmiri Muslims to come out in large numbers to defeat the BJP. It's also true that the BJP was rejected outright by the Kashmiri electorate. All of its candidates, barring one in the Amirakadal constituency, lost their security deposit, despite the fact that the BJP allegedly spent thousands of crores of rupees. Even the Kashmiri Pandits held aloof from the electoral exercise. The point is not that the BJP won or lost in Kashmir. The BJP was destined to bite dust in Kashmir and it happened. The point is the hatred Jora has developed for the Hindtuva, which was described by the Supreme Court of India as a way of life.
