Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 1: Communal forces in the Valley say that their religion is in danger and that they want Kashmir's complete independence from India to save their religion, culture and dignity. Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Syed Salah-ud-Din, Asiya Andrabi and many like them in Kashmir go to the extent of demanding merger of the Kashmir Valley with Muslim Pakistan, saying since Jammu and Kashmir is a Muslim majority region, it must become part of Muslim Pakistan on the basis of two-nation theory. They abuse India despite the fact that they, like their co-religionists in the rest of the country enjoy full religious freedom. They do not realize the implications of what they are demanding since decades. They do even take cognizance of the miserable plight of their co-religionists in Pakistan-occupied-Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan region, integral parts of India which have been under the illegal occupation of Pakistan since 1947-1948. They refuse to acknowledge that while the Shiite-majority Gilgit-Baltistan region has been up in arms against Islamabad since decades, a very vast majority of Muslims in the PoJK is also fed up with the Islamic State of Pakistan. They, like the Shiite Muslims in Gilgit-Baltistan, say that they do not enjoy equal rights with the Pakistanis and that they are treated like second class citizens.
They need to realize that India is perhaps the only non-Muslim country where the minorities are very safe and secure. What happened recently in China must open their eyes and help them change their attitude towards India. In the Muslim dominant region of Xinjiang, a 38-year-old man was sentenced to six year imprisonment by the Chinese court. What was his crime? His crime was that he was keeping a beard. Not only this, his wife was also sentenced to two years of imprisonment for "wearing an Islamic veil". "Ironically, this took place in Kashgar, the city romanticized in Iqbal's poetry", said a report on Wednesday. The report was carried by a leading Pakistani daily, the dawn.
The same report further said: "In July last year, the government forbade Xinjiang officials to fast in the month of Ramazan, and initiated a robust campaign discouraging native women from wearing veil…These increasingly despotic measures are being adopted under the doctrine that counter-terrorism definitively trumps individual liberty, although I'm personally having a hard time figuring out how to weaponise yoghurt and facial hair…Between 1964 and 1996, China conducted more than 40 poorly-controlled, nuclear tests in Xinjiang. An expert who studied radiation effects from tests by the US, France, and former Soviet Union, calculated that as many as 194,000 people may have died from acute radiation poisoning, among a whopping 1.2 million people who received doses high enough to induce cancer and gross fetal abnormalities".
The report is also highly critical of Pakistan and says that Islamabad is ignoring what has been happening in China to the Chinese Muslims. The report said: "Ultimately, the Chinese government's greatest feat is to have its President sit beamingly in the same room as the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, without 'Uighur' creeping into conversation."
The report is self-explanatory and it is not filed by an India or a Hindu. It is filed by a Muslim and it has appeared in The Dawn. Will Geelani & Co appreciate the report and reform themselves?
