srinagar, Apr 1: The much hyped Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has become defunct since the day new government has been formed in Jammu and Kashmir. Most self styled leaders of the party who tried their best to somehow strike a deal with BJP high command seem to have given up and resigned to their fate and being snubbed by the party top brass.
Sources told Early Times a few BJP candidates from Kashmir region who contested the last assembly elections unsuccessfully had made a beeline in New Delhi till the recent past and were trying their best to seek favours from the party leadership. "Party high command has made it clear to most of them (BJP leaders) that first they have to prove themselves and then demand," sources added.
They said a few BJP leaders from Kashmir were hoping that they would be given a MLC berths or would be nominated as chairpersons of various boards but their hopes were dashed by the party high command. "The BJP top leadership has decided that it would first accommodate its old hands and compensate them for the services which they have rendered to the party during all these years," sources added.
Another factor which, according to the sources, has gone against the Kashmir based leaders is that they provided wrong feedback to the party high command and made it believe that BJP is on a strong wicket in the Valley. However, BJP drawing a blank from Kashmir in the recent assembly polls has punctured their tall claims. "No one in Delhi is ready to repose their faith on BJP Kashmir leaders, as all their claims have fallen flat and most of their predictions have turned to be hoax," sources added.
They said that BJP leadership has taken a serious note of these leaders taking huge amounts from the party fund prior to assembly polls for "strengthening" BJP's base in Kashmir. "Despite party spending money like anything in Kashmir it was unable to achieve desired results," sources added.
They said top BJP leaders were so annoyed with the Kashmir based party leaders that they had at one point of time asked them to wind up the operations in the Valley.
A few BJP leaders from Kashmir, according to the sources, were in touch with National Conference, when party high command was holding negotiations with the PDP to form the government in JK. "Some BJP leaders from Kashmir were not in favour of party joining hands with PDP and tried to sabotage the alliance till the last moment," sources claimed.
They said party high command has sidelined the Kashmir based leadership as a "punishment" to them. "Soon after the BJP struck a deal with PDP to form the government in JK the party high command came to know that a few Kashmir based leaders were leaking information to NC about the day to day developments which were taking place vis-à-vis government formation in the state," sources added.
They said party high command has made it clear to Kashmir based leaders to perform or perish and if anyone is found violating the discipline of the party he would have to face the consequences. |
