Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 17: Last year's floods did not destroy houses and infrastructure alone, crops and even land were destroyed as well.
As per official figures, loss to crops and fruits which include Apple Orchards, Paddy, Maize fields and vegetable gardens in 10 districts of Kashmir besides Leh District of Ladakh division was estimated at 38000 hectares which was either completely washed away or excessively.
Besides out of the 3 lakh Hectares of crop area in Kashmir division around 1.35 Lakh Hectares were also damaged by flood while as 1.65 Lakh Hectares were severely affected due to incessant rains, drop in temperature and diseases to different crops, vegetables and fruits.
In terms of loss to production, officials accounts reveal that it was assessed at 8,54,213 MT in respect of Cereals, 5,08,492 MT in respect of Vegetables, 14,02,472 MT of Fodder, 1773 MT of Pulses and 11 MT of Saffron and the overall loss was estimated as Rs 3675 Crore.
However when experts believe that 75 to 80% of population in Jammu and Kashmir still love to associate themselves with Horticulture and agriculture sector directly and indirectly and earn their livelihood, state government is yet to pay a single penny as part of Relief to Orchardists and farmers who faced loss to their crops and Orchards in last year floods.
"Successive Governments are merely focused on Tourism Sector which does not even employ half of the population of one District of Kashmir and continues to ignore Agriculture economy which still has a capacity to feed 80 % population directly and 90 % indirectly of the state," said Inam-ul-Haq, an economist immediately after floods authorities formulated an assistance plan of Rs 64.17 Crore for farmers to assist the farmers in Kashmir, However according to PDP Minister for Horticulture, state government is still waiting for assistance from union government to pay to the farmers and orchardists who suffered massive loss during last year floods.
"You must be knowing we have sent a relief proposal of rupees 44,000 crore to union government last year and we hope that we will receive our share of funds demanded as part of relief to flood affected people very soon, so that we can provide relief to farmers and Orchardists who suffered loss to their crops and fruits and who's land got washed away," added Minister for Horticulture, Abdul Rehamn Veeri Pertinently floods of last year also washed away soil and pesticide testing labs of Lal Mandi Srinagar which are yet to be reconstructed, thereby adding worries for Orchardists and Farmers who need soil testing labs and for the department itself which needs pesticide labs to test pesticides coming from other states of the country.
