Let Mufti blend liberalism and firm action against separatists
4/18/2015 12:21:29 AM
That the state unit of the BJP is on pins
because of what its leaders call pro-
separatist policy being followed by Chief Minister,Mufti Mohd.Sayeed.The BJP leaders of Jammu believe that the policy of the Mufti towards the separatists has not yielded desired result.Instead it has vitiated the atmosphere in the state.Well as far as the leaders of the state unit of the Congress are concerned they hold the BJP responsible for the current spell of political and security instability on the ground that the BJP has virtually surrendered its objectives, its aims, its poll commitments and other ideas before the PDP leadership. In fact the National Conference leadership feels delighted over the turn of events. The NC leadership has been claiming that from the 2010 peoples' strife in which about 120 people were killed till it lost power the National Conference led coalition Government had succeeded in improving political and security environment in the state. Well the NC-Congress coalition Government can claim credit for having kept the separatists under some discipline with the result there was no anti-India or pro-Pakistan sentiments on display on the pattern of sentiments displayed by separatists and their supporters in Srinagar on Wednesday. Separatists got an opportunity to make a display of their anti-India sentiments by waving Pakistani flags and by shouting pro-Pakistan slogans.Yes,FIRs were filed in the police station against some of these separatists but the BJP wants firm action.
Since the leaders of the state unit of the BJP were rocked and rattled by the display of anti-India sentiments in Srinagar which was possible after the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, had favoured restoration of freedom of speech and movement for these separatists. These leaders, finding themselves between the devil and the deep sea situation, had to seek help from the party leadership. That was the reason for the centre to ask Jammu and Kashmir Government to take strictest possible steps against those involved in "anti-national" actions during a rally by hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on the outskirts of Srinagar. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke on phone to Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed and made it clear that the issue of national security cannot be compromised. The Chief Minister briefed Singh about what happened at the rally and the situation there,. Singh told Sayeed that "any step which can be termed as anti-national cannot be tolerated," . The Home Minister directed that "strictest possible action should be taken against those involved in it." After a gap of five years, Jammu and Kashmir Government yesterday allowed Geelani to hold the rally where his supporters including Masarat Alam, released from jail last month, raised pro-Pakistan slogans and others waved Pakistani flags. Alam, who was released soon after PDP-BJP government came to power in the state, led the march from the Srinagar Airport to Geelani's residence at Hyderpora.
There are reports that suggest that Mufti Sayeed was trying to follow the policy of liberalization that was followed by late G.M.Sadiq when he was the Chief Minister between 1963 and 1971. Sadiq had lifted restrictions on the freedom of speech and movement of Sheikh Abdullah who had been released from Jail in 1964. Sadiq's liberal policy had forced Sheikh Abdullah lose some of his charisma despite the fact that he attracted large crowds to his public rallies in different parts of the state. But Mufti Sayeed should realise that the political and security environment that exists in the state at present is totally different from what it was in late 60's. At that time it was othe Plebiscite Front that had to be taken care of but this time there are about 30 separatist outfits receiving moral, material and political support from Pakistan. And the Pakistan sponsored militancy had made the security and political atmosphere totally different from the one that existed in late 60's. This was the reason that separatists took advantage of Sayeed's liberal policy and demonstrated their pro-Pakistan sentiments. It will be better if Mufti Sayeed blends liberal policy with firm action so that those trying to vitiate the atmosphere were punished and those who simply want their shop to remain open be allowed freedom of speech.
