GGM Sc College hosts 343rd Avian Entomo Tree Talk

JAMMU, Apr 18: To focus on bird and insect associations with plants and trees and highlight role of feathered friends and winged insects in plant pollination , seed germination, fruit dispersal and bio-control of harmful pests and predators in nature ,343rd Avian Entomo Tree Talk was today hosted in GGM Science heritage college of Jammu . The event was attended by 100 students ,teachers and Professors and culminated by aromatic Cinnamon plant sapling by tree talk enthusiasts.
Principal GG c college Prof. Satinder Singh applauded concept of Tree Talk in popularising Tree Taxonomy with focus on native names and traditional uses. Dogra rulers introduced heritage culturally and religiously important trees like Bel, Himchampa, Arjun, Coral tree, Bargad, Jamun, Neem Chameli, Maulsari, Jiyopota in college campus. Likewise Mughals introduced Chinars, Maples, Hazelnuts, Hawthorns, English oaks, Tilias, Privets in Kashmir. Prof Pinky Manhas, HoD Environmental Department focused on medicinal secondary metabolites of common shrubs like curry patta ,Adusa , Dhataki , Nirgundi , Bajrdanti , Suhali , Lemon basil , Jatropha , Sukhchain , Aloe and appealed to conserve threatened taxa in herbal garden of the college.
Prof Ranvijay, HoD Zoology focused on bio-insecticidal action of trees like Monkey face tree Kamilla ,Persian Lilac Dhraink ,Margosa tree Neem and highlighted that dragonflies eat away mosquitoes and keep mosquitoes under control .Gambusia fish also feeds on mosquito larvae.
O P Sharma, Vidyarthi APCCF and Tree Talk founder shared that weekly biodiversity awareness programme nicknamed Tree Talk launched w.e.f 19th December 2010 has so far hosted 343 sessions in different locations, campaign coincides with UN declared International Decade of Biodiversity 2011-2020. He advocated idea of establishing Chyawanprash Gardens at religious pilgrimage centres like Katra , Mansar, Shahdra Shrief, Sudh Mahandev, Shivkhodi, Baba Bhaid, Gatha Bhaderwah, Machail Paddar, Zithyar,Tulamula, Bhadarkali in J&K. Other prominent speakers who shared inputs on heritage trees included Dr. Bharti Razdan, Prof P Bambroo, Dr. Anita, Dr. Anuradha Pandoh, Prof Vinod Bakshi , Vikas Dogra , S iti Agarwal, Lekh Raj, Dr. Alpna Vohra, Dr. Rohini, Rajesh, Neeti Chhibbar, Sushma Mam, Kamal, Ankush, Haq Nawaz, Avantika, Sonika, Pallavi and other nature lovers.
