Early Times Report

Rajouri, Apr 19: Even after a gap of more than 7 months, Rajouri administration has failed to construct suspension bridge at Androla which was washed away in flash floods following incessant rains on September 6 last year.
The suspension bridge at Androla was a major connecting link between Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch highway and Jammu-Kalakot-Poonch road and hundreds of students, locals, officer goers, teachers and others crossed this bridge for their daily routine activities. Presently in the absence of this foot bridge people have to go to Muradpur about 6 kilometers to cross to other side by using main bridge and then to come back to their respective places that has become a time consuming processes and added financial burden on the poor people.
This foot bridge was also used by the motorcyclists and especially by students thus saving their precious time.
"To save time and money poor people and students used to cross the river on feet or they were crossing the river by crawling/moving on the big iron ropes used for the suspension of the bridge and were still intact and tied with pillars on both sides of the river" said Rafiq Ahmed.
"But the administration has stopped this process apprehending incidents of grievous injuries/drowning after falling from these ropes and have deputed policemen at this spot," said Mohammad Hussain. Presently the people of the area have constructed a temporary boat and crossing the river at the cost of their lives and whenever there were rains in the area they stop crossing using the boat as it may be washed by heavy current of waters.
"The matter has been taken up several times with the district administration and concerned authorities but due to their casual approach the inhabitants of the area have been suffer lot," said Muneer Hussan. After getting no positive response from the concerned departments and district administration, the inhabitants of the area have been planning to close Jammu-Poonch highway in favor of their demand and to awake concerned officials from their deep slumber or from their casual approach in this matter.
When contacted Abdul Majid Wani, Executive Engineer PWD (R&B) informed that initially the suspension bridge at Androlla was included in the State Disinter Relief Fund (SDRF) and under SDRF guidelines it was to be repaired/completed within 45 days
He added as the bridge was totally collapsed and was not possible to construct it within stipulated time period so it was decided to convert it from suspension bridge to for Light Motor Vehicles(LMVs) and for that proposal worth Rs 4 crores, including construction of approach roads on both sides up to high ways has already been cleared by the State government.
"The e-tendering was called and a contractor from Kashmir will soon be issued allotment letter for the construction of this bridge and it was hoped that and within 18 months after issuing allotment the bridge will be constructed," said Abdul Majid Wani.
