Let Alamdar Colony be within SMC limits, demand residents

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 24: Residents of Alamdar Colony, Gopalpora in central Kashmir's Budgam district, which is mere 12 km from Srinagar, have called upon the government to bring the colony under the jurisdiction of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).
"This is important because we are faced with a lot of hardships as heaps of garbage, open drains and water logging have made our lives hell," they said.
The colony has a population of around 2500 people. The area does not fall within the jurisdiction of SMC and right now most of the works which could be executed in the area are not taken up due to the administrative problems.
The locals say that the development works in the area are supposed to be executed by Rural Development Department but due to the non-availability of land in the colony and alleged indifference of concerned officials, these works especially under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) are not being executed.
"There are three panchayat wards in the colony and three Panchs were elected a few years back but no works have been executed in our area as the colony is semi urban area with no land available to undertake such kinds of works. If Humhama which is at the same distance from Srinagar has been included within SMC limits why not ours? If Buchpora area which is 14 kms from Srinagar's Lal Chowk has all the facilities and falls under SMC's jurisdiction, why not Gopalpora," asked Fayaz Ahmad while talking to Early Times.
As no garbage containers are available in the area, the residents throw garbage by the roadside. "The garbage collecting vehicle doesn't come to the area as it is not in the jurisdiction of SMC" said another resident . Heaps of garbage could be seen by the roadside which emanates foul smell making the pedestrian movement immensely difficult. "During summers there is every possibility of the outbreak of disease."
The area also faces water logging problem and when the locals went to UEED officials for construction of a drain in the area, they said UEED can only execute work in urban areas falling under SMC limits . " Neither is Rural Development Department doing any work in our area nor can SMC or UEED do any work , where shall we go? Aren't we the taxpayers? Don't we vote and elect representatives?" asked Mushtaq Ahmad.
"If our colony is brought under the jurisdiction of Srinagar Municipality Corporation, we might get some relief from the open drains, garbage problem and water logging,' he said.
The locals also appealed R&B Minister Altaf Bukhari to visit the area and redress their grievances.
