Jammu, Apr 24: The day-long bandh in Jammu over the apparent shifting of AIIMS from here to Kashmir Valley as well as the state's new recruitment policy continued today with reports of sporadic clashes between the people and police.
The shops remained closed and traffic was off the roads in the city following the bandh called by Jammu Chambers of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), and supported by various political, social, transport and trade organisations.
There was no response from BJP and the Mufti Sayeed government over the issue.
"Business establishments and shops remained closed in the city and traffic was off the roads due to the bandh," a police official said adding that by and large it was peaceful without no untoward incident reported from anywhere.
The bandh also affected the attendance in government offices and educational institutes.
It saw a chain of anti-government demonstrations, rallies and burning of effigies by Congress, National Conference, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers party (JKNPP), VHP, Bajrang Dal, transport organisations and student unions over the issue of AIIMS and the state's new recruitment policy.
An anti-government rally by the State Congress General Secretary Vikram Malhotra and Youth Congress state Chief Pranav Salgotra was stopped by the police near bus stand resulting in brief clashes.
"It is our democratic right to hold protest, but the police resorted to unprovoked lathi charge on us," General secretary of Pradesh congress committee Vikram Malhotra said.
"We demand the state government to immediately grant AIIMS to Jammu. People of Jammu who voted for BJP have been deceived by them," Congress spokesman Ravinder Sharma said.
JCCI President A Gupta and Congress State Vice President Sham Lal Sharma registered their protest by taking out a vehicle rally.
"We question BJP for its criminal silence and indifferent attitude over the issue of AIIMS in Jammu," Sharma said. "This government is discriminating with the people of Jammu region and we will not tolerate this, there needs to be equitable development in the region," a National Conference leader said.
JKNPP leader Harsh Dev Singh said, "We are not against setting up of AIIMS in Kashmir but it should not be at the cost of Jammu."
Protests were also held by activists of state unit of Bajrang Dal who accused the government of playing with the sentiments of people.
"BJP-PDP government has discriminated with the Jammu region. We will continue to agitate so that our right of AIIMS is restored to Jammu," Bajrang Dal Convener Rakesh Kumar said.
Hindustan Shiv Sena, workers of Dogra Front, Shiv Sena also stages protest demonstration at various places.
In Kathua large number of Congress party workers held strong protest against the shifting of AIIMS from Jammu, new recruitment
policy and land Acquistion Bill under the leadership of Pankaj Dogra President District Congress Committee Kathua. People of Jammu are only demanding their rights and are not opposed if Kashmir region is sanctioned another AIIMS like institute.

The procession waving to the people amid the echoing slogans- "Jammu ka AIIMS..Jammu Ko Do", "Nai Bharti Neeti..Wapis Lo" and "Jammu Ke Sath Bhed Bhav.. Band karo"commenced from the Dogra Chowk and after passing through several markets finally culminated at City Chowk. Moreover, hundreds of Panthers party activists staged an impressive
protest demonstration at Vijaypur.
In Hiranagar, the Congress workers started protest from Ram Leela Chowk Hiranagar and after passing through main bazaar Hiranagar submitted a memorandum to the His Excellency the Governor of J&K through SDM Hiranagar demanding retaining of AIIMS at Jammu. NPSU activists also staged protest demonstration lambasting BJP-PDP coalition government said that, government had snatched prestigious AIIMS worth Rs.1600 Crores. Progressive Youth Forum (PYF) activists staged a massive protest demonstration at Canal Road, Near GGM Science College, Jammu. Prominent Congress functionaries under the leadership of PCC executive committee member Mohinder Bhardwaj, advocate in solidarity with the Jammu band call.
Addressing the gathering Bhardwaj said that the anti-Jammu policies of the government have exposed the ugly face of the BJP which has over the decades been exploiting sentiments of Jammuites through delivering false promises.
Day-Long Bandh Over AIIMS Issue Halts Jammu City

A day-long bandh in Jammu today hit the city's transport and business entities after various political and social groups called for a strike over the reported shifting of AIIMS from here to Kashmir Valley.
The bandh was called by the Jammu Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and is supported by various political, social, transport and trade organisations of Jammu.
Transport vehicles remained off the roads with private transport unions extending support to the strike.
The passengers faced the grunt due to the strike as it became difficult for them to reach their destinations. The travellers coming to Jammu on various trains also faced difficulties as they were unable to find vehicles for the city.
Shops and other business establishments along with some educational institutions remained closed in the heart Jammu.
Meanwhile, no incident of violence or protest has been reported so far from any part of the region.
"So far, the situation continues to be normal as the bandh evokes total response in the region," a police official said.
However, the business in some other parts of the city was usual. In districts like Samba, Kathua and Udhampur, the bandh call evoked a mixed response with no effect on the usual businesses. Today being the last working day of the Civil Secretariat in Jammu before the offices move to the summer capital of Srinagar, there was a thin attendance of staff in the offices across the Jammu region.
Several political parties, including the opposition National Conference (NC), Congress, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), state unit of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Kranti Dal, Bajrang Dal have extended their support for the bandh.
Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association Jammu too have extended their support.
