Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 24 : Member Legislative Council of Peoples' Democratic Party Firdous Tak Friday called on Governor NN Vohra here at Rajbhawan to seek his personal intervention in restoration of Batote-Kishtwar highway and creation of new alternate route to the Chenab Valley. The PDP legislator submitted a detailed memorandum to the Governor highlighting the present status of the highway, which has suffered huge damage due to torrential rains in the region, leaving more than 7 lakh populations at the verge of being cut of permanently from the rest of world. The governor was urged to impress upon Government of India to prepare a plan for new highway NH1-B and also to expedite the process for construction of Singpur-Vailoo tunnel and Sudmahadev-Marmat-Doda roads, which will be used an alternate routes.
He also sought scientific study of the causes leading to the total damage of highway despite millions of rupees spent recently on its widening and maintenance.
Tak informed the Governor that a ministerial team, on the direction of Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, had recently visited the twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar to assess the situation. "The work being executed by the Jammu and Kashmir R&B Department also deserves appreciation as despite financial constrains and no withstanding the highway being under the administrative control of union government the officials have been working day and night to keep the road open", he informed the governor. In his memorandum, the governor was informed that the sudden shift in the annual rainfall and ecological disturbances created due to various reasons including earthquakes, reservoirs created for Baglihar and Dul-Hasti dam and deforestation has compounded the situation.
"At present the entire population of more than 7 lakh was at the verge of being cut off from the rest of world due to the deteriorating condition of Batote-Kishtwar National Highway - the only surface link (all weather roads) to the region".
