Rains trigger massive water-logging in Srinagar
4/27/2015 11:24:46 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Apr 27: The overnight rains trigger water-logging at many places in state's summer capital with roads inundating and drains overflowing at the moment.
Water-logging at major portion of Lal Chowk, Polo View, Dalgate, Paladium Gali, Koker Bazar and other places led to traffic jams and badly hampered public movement.
M A Road and Residency Road are completely water-logged at various points. Experts attribute the water-logging to collapsed drainage system in the city. The breakdown of the drainage system in the September floods continues to be greater cause of concern for the people and the authorities.
The Polo-View market remained completely water-logged during the day. At many places authorities had to press in the fire-tenders and pumps for de-watering of the inundated roads.
Meanwhile the Airport road from Jahangir Chowk to Rambagh witnessed huge traffic jams during the day. Hundreds of policemen deployed in the city were seen busy in regulating the traffic. However, the showers and the water-logging at many places made the task of road clearance difficult for the policemen.
Meteorological department has forecasted moderate to rather heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours. According to the MeT department fresh western disturbance has started to affect several parts of Jammu and Kashmir. In next two days, the rains are expected to influence the weather in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and plains of North India.
Places that have received rain in J&K in last 24 hours include Gulmarg with 32 mm of rain, Kokernag 6 mm, Kupwara 31 mm, Pahalgam 12 mm, and Srinagar 14 mm of rain.
The rain is anticipated to affect the harvest of key rabi crop that includes wheat, gram and mustard. Already bleeding from the pain caused by the untimely rain, farmers growing wheat, mustard and fruits like apple and other stone-fruits are likely to be inflicted with further aching .
Amid rainfall, many have set their eyes on up surging Jhelum - that seems to 'play prank' with public since March this year by constantly changing its status. Many now fear: already breached banks might go berserk again, if it rains nonstop.
"Authorities must plug drainage loopholes and riverbank breaches on war-footing," Manzoor Ahmad, a fruite vender said. "It has really become a nuisance. Earlier, spring shower would trigger romantic feelings around. But now, the feeling has been overtaken by weather shock or trauma."
"The moment it rains now, feelings like breaches, floods and water-logging instantly surface - and thus, instill a 'weather trauma' in public" said Manzoor.
