SRINAGAR, May 5: Defending his government's decision of arresting separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat, chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that Alam took an extreme position which cannot be tolerated by any government in the state.
Addressing a press conference here after the reopening of Darbar Move offices, Mufti said that everyone is welcome to propagate his own ideas, but these should be within the 'limits'. He said that government would not tolerate acts that are much beyond the limits of decency and humanity.
"Difference of opinion is beauty of democracy and I have always maintained that democracy is battle of ideas. But at the same time it is important that political personalities should be decent enough to distinguish between good and bad. Responsible people like Masarat Alam should not take law into their hands since it would be detrimental to the peace in the state," said the chief minister.
Mufti dismissed the allegations that the state government's decisions are taken on the diktats of RSS and said that the coalition dispensation is capable enough to take decisions of their own. He asked the people to be patient and said that two months are not enough to evaluate the performance of the coalition government being headed by him.
"Our government is just two months old but people believe that we have been in the power for years. Let the people give us some time and they should compare our performance with that of the previous government only after giving sufficient period of time. We have prioritized our efforts and there is going back on the same," said the Chief Minister.
Mufti said that rehabilitation of people affected by September 2014 flood is the top priority of the state government. He said that government would leave no stone unturned in rebuilding the infrastructure damaged by the devastating deluge. He added that tourism sector also suffered due to the devastating flood and the government would focus its attention to this important aspect as well.
"The big issue that is confronting the government is that of compensation to flood affected people and rebuilding the schools and other damaged infrastructure. We were yet to come out of the shock of the flood when the incessant rains posed yet another challenge to us. The ministers were on roads to help people as the flood like situation emerged after the incessant rains," said the chief minister.
Mufti said that roads are in dilapidated condition in the state and the government would take all possible measures to carry out repairs of the roads. He said that focus would be laid on the upgradation of the road infrastructure and that there would be a visible change in this regard. He expressed concern over the bad condition of Srinagar-Jammu national highway and said that highway would be made motorable.
Referring to the controversy over the recruitment policy of the government the Chief Minister said that the policy has been announced to fasten the process of recruitment and that too in a transparent manner. He said that appointments would be carried out in a fair manner and the process would be a model for the other states to follow. He said that Education Minister Naeem Akhtar is the official spokesman of the government and his statement should be taken as final one with regard to the government policies.
"We have formed an agenda of alliance and we are committed to follow the same. However, at this moment of time governance is important and it would take some time for good governance to take place. Let us govern first and I hope and believe that all the good things would follow. We are in the process of paying compensation to the non-insured traders and at the same time we also want tourism to flourish since it is important to state's economy," said Mufti.
