| Terrorism in general and religion based terrorism in particular is on ascendency. The later has graduated from Jehad for establishment of Sharia in place of recognized democratic arrangements not only in Islamic Countries but also in several places.
Pakistan had come a long way since independence. "you are free; to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this state of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed. That has nothing to do with the business of state," Mohd. Ali Jinnah, the Quaid- A- Azam, has said in his inaugural address to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan in 1947. Today sectarianism has become a factor fueling terrorism in Pakistan. Militantgroups have been busy targeting Shia mosques and businesses and bombing churches. The notorious blasphemy law, which came into being during the days of General Zia has been widely misused. Governor of Punjab SalmaTaseer was shot by his body guard, an extremist in police uniform, for speaking out against the law. "Pakistan self - inflicted suffering comes from an education system that, Saudi Arabia's system, provides an ideological foundation for violence and future Jehadists".
MilitantJehad became part of the culture on college and University campuses in Pakistan. Armed groups and had started openlyrecruiting students for Jehad in Afghanistan and Kashmir. It was only after the eventof 19/11 that the Kashmir issue faded into the background with the focus almost completely shifting to Afghanistan. But now Kashmir becametheir green posture with the help of Pakistanis armed forces and are on the radar of the "Jehadi" groups. There is also a Punjabi Taliban, whose focus is more on the Kashmir and sectarian issues than on Afghanistan. It has carried out attacks in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and so many cities in and outside Pakistan.
Hurriyat which is active in Kashmir, was created by Pakistan which wanted political representation in Kashmir. JKLF had completely fallen out with Pakistan, when HashimQuershi went there, they kept asking him to fight against India and join Pak establishments. He told them that Kashmir wanted independence and didn't want to be either with India or Pak, all help immediately stopped. Every single leader who has gone across has had the same experience. The moment they talk about Kashmir's independence, ISI and other militant out-fits turns on them like wolves. Pak was not prepared for this thirdoption but wanted a party in Pak , which would represent that option. At that time, Hizb -Ul- Mujahedeen (HM) was in their control. Pak turns towards HM and was giving arms to them since. Now they wanted a representative to raise voice against India and their establishments and Hurriyat, was the best. For the polls of 1996, there were discussions inside Hurriyat whether to contest or not. It is said that Prof. Abdul Gani was in favour of contesting the 1996 elections but Pak did not want it. Then again 2002, Pak discouraged theHurriyat contesting the elections. This is the pattern of Pak establishment working in and outside Pakistan.
Indian Investigation Bureau discredits Kashmiri Nationalist Leaders by giving them money and exposing them. ISI gives them money and kills them. History is witnessed to both developments. In between them, the Kashmiryat is lost. There is no single strong voice from Kashmir to represent the voice of people it is a realistic thinking and ideology of the people of the Kashmir now. Geelani has lost his voice since but he wants to keep his voice alive in the shape of shutdowns, strikes and by means of religious exploitation in the valley.
The separatists, claiming to represent the masses, are fragmented and diverse in their approach. Each group has an agenda which is different from the other. They have sections within sections, each section claiming to be the true representatives of the innocent people. Nevertheless, they have been active for decades. They have been facing the burnt. They are in the limelight, off and on, to criticize the policies and program of the Govt. No one can say exactly how much influence these self styled leaders have upon the denizens of Kashmir as they ran a parallel government in 2010 when their "shutdown calendars" were followed by everyone. They have been successful in breaking the political and administrative barracked to mobilize thousands of people to shake the mainstream governmental settings. They are answerable now to the people of Kashmir, how many lives we will have to feed to keep the resistance movement going on, how many years of bloodshed we will have to continue to achieve what they want to achieve.
Separatists leaders may be darling of the masses in real sense but of course, there is a section within the society who may disagree with their policies and means, they are practicing to achieve the goal. Verily, they are accountable and answerable to people of Kashmir. People cannot afford to keep the resistance movement going forever, there should be a visible end and end which will end the killings, shutdowns, hartals (Imbroglio) farever, be it a solution of any form. Common Kashmiri is not in favour of destruction of human life and annihilation more. They well understand their intentions and know what is good for them and what is bad. They will not be exploited by disturbing the peace in the valley anymore . It is heard that Geelani is trying its best to divert the attention of the people towards the issue of duration of forthcoming AmarnathYatra and the return of the Kashmiri Pandits. The author asks the Hurriyat leaders " if Muslims can visit their religious places during any time of the year, if christens can visit their religious places, why can't the Hindu's be allowed a visit their religious places like AmaranathJi Shrine cave as per their wish with religious fervor. May it continue for one month or two or a full year, how does it matter for others to object it". It is only religious hatredness and nothing else.
India has became the early target of the Jehadi terrorism. Kashmir is only a pretext. The jehadi's areunhappy with democratic, secular and social dispensation of India for all of its citizens irrespective of their religion. We have seen that in Kashmir, thousands of moderates have been killed in cold blood because they would not succumb to pernicious orthodoxy. This is all because the people have enjoyed the good result of democratic dispensation and they would not like to forsake it for rabid fanaticism.Muslims enjoy all the freedom in India. There is no bar on them to seek higher education in any part of India. Among all the states in the country, Jammu & Kashmir has the highest Muslim population 68.3 % followed by Assam 34.2% according to the census data on the population of Religious groups.
More then Rs. 560 crores have been spent on security and for providing VIP accommodation to separatists and anti national elements during the past five years. Those who raise the banner of revolt against India and spit venom while being the sympathizers of Pak have been given VVIP treatment by the state government. Of course, India is green pasture for them. The separatists are finding themselves to be irrelevant in the present situation which has compelled them to raise the issue of Amarnathyatra to attract to public and media attention they are trying to vitiate the atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir but they would neither succeed in it nor people will allow them to succeed
Muslims in Kashmir seem to be fed up now with the way developments in the state have been taking shape for the last two decades in the wake of terrorism unleashed there with the tact support of Pak. While nursing hopes for an independent Kashmir free from Indian control, there are elements who like to be with Pak at any cost. Things are no so easy to fulfill their expectations, howsoever high these may be.
The proxy war unleashed by Pak sponsor terrorism on the state has not yielded any dividends for them, nor can it be possible for it to snatch away Kashmir from India.
The fact, however, remains, that they have spoiled the secular, political, social and economic life of the valley. This seems to have been realized by the local militants there and it is the main reason why thy now aspire for peace with dignity. |
